Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Bottle at Brewtopia ’04. Deep golden color with little head. Aroma is malt and spicy orange with no hop aroma as expected for the style. Flavor is heavily spiced, citrusy. Not bad.

Bottle. Clear, greyish nut brown colour, small head. Slightly hoppy aroma. The flavour is full, nice and peppery. Nice and warming alcohol feel.

Isn’t the label a rating category? Darn...should be! Oh well, I guess we’ll have to rate this one the contents. Poured a ruddy-orange with a light head. Aroma has a bit nutty (odd?). Tasted was surprisingly spicy, with a sweet ride to the finish.

On draft at some little BBQ joint in Seal Beach, CA. Really nice example of the style, a pleasant spice to cut the bigness that comes off drinkable and fantastic.

Poured a quickly dissipating frothy head. Almost no lacing. Dark orange and copper colored. Strong spicy/fruit aroma. Taste of Spice and alcohol with lots of candi sugar. Will buy another and cellar.

Bomber bottle with a very interseting label. hazzy dark amber with medium head that diminished quickly. Complex sweet fruit aroma. Medium body with smooth texture. Complex full flavor with long sweet finish with a small alcohol bite. The brew was as interesting as the label.

This pours a copper color with a good size head, but it diverts to lacing quite quick. It maintains that throughout the glass though. Smell is sugary and yeasty, with something that reminds me of pineapple. It was odd when I first tried this 2.5 years ago, but I like it now. Taste is similar with more caramel malt flavors appearing, but the sweetness is the real feature here. The beer tastes good before swallowing, but there’s something weird about the finish, as if that pineapple flavor in the aroma all of a sudden goes bad. It might just be that the hops don’t gel at all with the sugars and yeast, but it tastes like cheap bubblegum on the back of my throat. Don’t get me wrong, I like cheap gum, but I don’t want it here. Immort Ale was able to do a good finish on a beer like this, but this one misses. I think Avery was more successful with Samael as far as low-hop, really sweet beers go. I like the low carbonation levels, the thick mouthfeel, the non-apparent alcohol, and the altering flavors, but that bubblegum aspect has got to change.

Subsequent tastings of this beer have shown no bad bubblegum or rotten pineapple flavors at all. Definitely a nice mellow yeast and grain flavor to the finish

i poured the reverend into my chimay glass and it gave off a clear amber color with no head at all.the aroma was grapefruit, and candy.from the smell i thought i might not be into this, but i was wrong.it had a very nice blend of hops, malts, and sweetness.very well balanced and it hides the alcohol well.if ya like sweet belgians, check this one out.
