Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

This beer pors almost deep orange. It shows notes of fruits, citrus and sugars. The mouthfeel really pushes the balance of the beer as even with the high alcohol content you do not seem to get a great deal of heat.

Pours a deep copper in color with a medium head. Aroma of sweet malt, caramel yeast and spices. Flavor was very similar to the aroma but with a slightly sweet tone.Finish could be longer but overall a decent quadrupel.

Poured a dark orange from a 22 oz bottle. A strong aroma of alcohol with a candy sugar smell. Fruity taste with banana being most dominant. It is quite sweet with a little bit of a bitter taste.

Not a favorite style but one of the better versions of the style I’ve tried. Not excessively acidic or vinous. Nicely blended and reasonably dry finish. Cherries, currants, and molasses.

Botle at Trappeze. Poured an amber orangish color. Aroma of dark and sweet fruit, candy sugar, spice. Taste is similar with lots of fruit, sweet malt, candy sugar, mild spice, kind of like a festive ale. Mouth is coating, syrupy. Finish is warming and sweet. Overall, a decent fruity and spicey ale.

Bottle. Yet another Quardrupel, but this time somewhat disappointing. Small off-white fizzy head that mostly diminished. Spar lacing. Light particles in flow and color were amber. Aroma was recognizable as a Quardrupel with notes of dry fruit, hint of bread, toffee, liquorish and light vinous. Medium to full bodied with a light alcoholic texture. Flavor was moderated sweet malt with hint of hops bitterness. Finish was short and sweet. Not as powerful as I had hoped, think it needs a bit more punch in the aroma and over the palate, but still a very drinkable Quardrupel.

THOUGHTS: At first smelled more like a tripel and tasted like a dubbel. But as it warmed it took on its own flavors and aromas. Sweet caramel flavor with just the right amount of hop bitterness. Balance is not bad but goes from overly sweet to an odd bitter quickly with nothing in berewwn. Needs better transition, but overall a really good beer. There was a little whiskey flavor too, later. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a medium to dark orangey amber with a small, white head that mostly diminished. The aroma was heavy caramel malt and light chocolate malt and some medium-colored fruit. The initial flavor was moderately sweed and lightly acidic, while the finish was heavily sweet and lightly acidic and bitter with an average duration. The body was medium to full and slightly syrupy (sticky on the lips) and dry in the back with fizzy carbonation and a very light metallic and lightly alcoholic finish.

Pours a deep copper into the glass with a slightly off white head. Aroma is belgian trappist yeast all the way. A bit of bubble gum in the flavor along with a rich sweet malt. Some spiciness in the finish. Nice effort from Avery.
