Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Bottled. Cloudy red-orange colour with with medium-sized head. Big, fruity aroma, with higher alcohols and bit toasty from dark malts. Warming, oozy alcohol is sensed in throat. Super smooth mouthfeel and rounded. Bitterness is noted but is not that high. Only light on the belgo-yeasty with notes of ripe prune. Very close to a Barley Wine here.

kinda hard to open cuz of the foil, especially if you’re already drunk.. tastes like a good syrup, good getting fucked up to price ratio..don’t chug it or you’ll puke

22oz from Total Wine @$6.99 (w/Coupon) Aroma didn’t unveal much about what was to come. Pours a redish-tan with a nice little white head. Okay quad true to the style. Nice spice with a somewhat hoppy finish. Stuck to the palate, rather creamy. Carbonation was noticable, nothing to much so. Not bad, but Avery makes better.

Poured this beer from the large-sized bottle into a trappist glass. The aroma was pleasant, featuring some dark fruits, candy tones, and some citrus hops too. It had a dark gold-straw color with a fairly large, foamy, white head that had pretty good retention. The taste was sweet, with the fruits and candy coming through, and maybe a touch of sourness. It was smooth on the palate, and the high alcohol content was barely discernible; a drier, thinner beer.

Poured a nice orange copper color; a little lighter than expected, but the lack of head retention and only a small, non-lasting head is what brings this one down. Smell is of caramel and dark fruit, some cherries as well. Taste is real nice, starts out with a burnt caramel flavor, toffee, and some dark fruits. I think this may even meld better with age. Mouthfeel is chewy, definitely full bodied with carbonation on the lower side, but still present. Pretty solid, and if I remember correctly, the best United States brewed quad that I’ve had. Certainly worth a try, I think I’ll be picking up a couple to age next time.

If I had a reverend like this, perhaps i’d go to church. Pours a reddish amber. Aroma is of fruit (apricot and banana, mostly), belgian yeast, spice, and bread. Taste is full of fruit, banana bread, yeast ethers. Nice full mouthfeel, good carbonation. This is good for an American version of a quad, but is nothing like the authentic belgian ales.
