badlizard (2325), Berkeley, California, USA Jul 29, 2007 650 mL bottle. Dark brown with a fizzy white head. Aroma of wheat, caramel, yeast, and alcohol. Chocolate, caramel, and toffee taste with a sweet bread taste to the finish. thefederalist (226), Jonesboro, Arkansas, USA Jul 29, 2007 Pours amber brown with a miserly head that is off-white and patchy. The nose is of lots of bready sweet malts, some fruit, very little in the way of hops and the beer has aged to the point where there is not much alcohol in the nose. The flavor is cloyingly sweet, over a thin body with some shockingly strong esters, some more doughiness, and enough fusel alcohol to knock you flat on your ass. These big beers from avery will give you a son-of-a-bitch hangover, and they don’t even taste good. I’m having trouble telling them apart. Not even close to being in the same league as the amazing Aventinus. marcus (1826), Sacramento, California, USA Jul 25, 2007 This reddish-brown ale poured with a modest tan head, eliciting a brown bread aroma. The flavor is surprising and unique - toffee and caramel with a licorice finish and a lingering alcohol burn. This is not like any other doppelbock I have had. beerbill (1918), Laurel, New York, USA Jul 22, 2007 22 oz. bottle. Pours a dark opaque brown with a thin, but long-lasting, linen white head. Pleasant aroma of toffee, caramel, a bit of chocolate, and raisins. Flavor is on the sweet side with plenty of toffee, caramel and malt along with some light chocolate and raisins. The smooth. almost silky mouthfeel is interupted by a strong alcohol burn. If the alcohol burn were toned down a bit, I would have liked this even better, but still very good as it is. pilsnerrogge (1770), Finspång, Sweden Jul 22, 2007 bottle Dark brown with a thick, creamy head. Sweet aroma with notes of toffee, liquorice and tobacco. Flavour is very sweet with notes of anise, liquorice and alcohol. Too strong and sweet for its own good. mvcramer (229), Arlington, Massachusetts, USA Jul 15, 2007 Strong toasted malty notes. Nice brown, almost black color, with a tan head that dissipated too quickly. Strong malty flavor with nice subtle chocolate and caramel notes. I liked this one. I think that by the time I bought it, Avery had moved on to #14, but this is a nice beer in a pretty difficult and random style. I have a fondness for Weizen Bocks and this is one that I wouldn’t hesitate to order again. Best for a fall/winter beer, but it’s my fault for drinking it in mid-July! BeerBelcher (930), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jul 13, 2007 I had this at the July Comet Cafe "beer school" in Milwaukee. It was a red-brown color with an inconsistent head. The beer had a grape-y aroma like a merlot (not like a cabernet). Flavor was more sour grapiness with some smokiness wihich surprised me a great deal. Mouthfeel was pretty ordinary. sistinas (60), Tempe, Arizona, USA Jul 12, 2007 On tap at Papago Brewing. Pours a dark red-brown with a dense, slowly-dissipating head. Aroma is sweet, with notes of caramel and raisins. Lots of malt flavor, with some caramel, coffee, chocolate, raisins... almost porter-like but sweeter. Very light, slightly syrupy mouthfeel. Astoundingly easy to drink for the amount of alcohol in it. A winner.
