Commercial Description:
Unlucky 13? If anything, 13 has been a lucky number and year for us! Here is our version of a Weizen Doppelbock, a very rarely brewed style marrying the complexities of two great German traditions, Weiss and Doppelbock. The aroma is dominated by fruity and spicy esters produced by the German Weiss yeast strain with a dry drinkability from the wheat malt. The flavor and color are dominated by the unique specialty grains that produce the Doppelbocks flavors of fresh baked bread, toffee and cocoa, and a dark-ruby red hue. Since goats have traditionally adorned Bock labels, we chose a Rocky Mountain Goat for this Rocky Mountain Bock. Peace to all and follow your dreams! Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, malted wheat, imported German specialty grains and hops, and one unique German yeast.

On tap at Papago Brewing. Pours a dark red-brown with a dense, slowly-dissipating head. Aroma is sweet, with notes of caramel and raisins. Lots of malt flavor, with some caramel, coffee, chocolate, raisins... almost porter-like but sweeter. Very light, slightly syrupy mouthfeel. Astoundingly easy to drink for the amount of alcohol in it. A winner.

(bottle - 22 oz) Ruby red color with a thin but creamy tan head. Aroma is very sweet with lots of raisins, caramel, toffee, and sweet malts. Flavor is very sweet and creamy with some sweetness, raisins, caramel, and a slightly bitter finish and aftertaste.

I know it has been retired, picked up a bottle in Seattle. Pours a deep reddish-brown color, nice head. Smells of raisen and toffee, first taste very smooth a lot of malt. A bit too sweet for me but ... it went down very easy for a 9.5% beer.

Dark brown color; thin head, not persistent. The aroma is light, with caramel and very light roasted malt. The body strength is ok, with dominant caramel flavor, also malt, roasted malt, liquorice and a light sourish note, probably the wheat. Closer to a Barley Wine than anything else, but not impressive.

Pours thick and dense and only releases it head once reaching the top of the glass. This will quickly dissipate to leave you staring into the woody brown depth of this glorius libation. Color is of dark stained oak or molasses. The nose exhibits a decidedly round toasted malt profile with hints of vanilla, fresh cut mahogany, dried date and raisin. The mouth feel is lightly effervesent and soft without becoming syrupy as a sizable dose of wheat malt takes over for the highly tactile finish. The flavor shows big brown roasted grain, pecan pie, light wood smoke, fig and date with slightly sweet hint of english toffee.

Good gravy, this is one malt-tastic beer. Deep brown body with a modest, fairly frothy head. The wheats really come through in a powerful way, and the chocolate breadiness makes this one chewy beer. It’s almost too much for me, impressive though I find the craft. Nice dry finish. Slight imbalance to me, but still a fine effort.

Mostly, this is almost nothing but alcohol in flavor. It’s very strongly full of alcohol throughout and makes this a very astringent beer. One of the few Avery diappointments for me.

Bomber from Greenwood. Sweet malty aroma with long-forgotten bockish grape of a lighter variety and brown sugar to level. Alcohol also present, caramel, too. Deep dark garnet body (slight purplish hue) with a rocky tanned head and firm carbonation. Taste is fruity and prominently spicy, sweet and only lightly bitter with a kick to the teeth from the alcohol. Soft and warming wheat with distinct yeasty and coriander notes. Is there rye in this? Light cocoa powder and still fainter sour cherry. Lightly crisp but no real trace of hops, murky thickness with an overly boozy end and impersonal throat warming. Mismatched caramel and stale grape aftertaste. There was a lot of potential here, but this is too raw and guileless; I’d like to see another attempt.
