GarrettB (494), Seattle, Washington, USA Mar 30, 2007 Updated: Oct 15, 2007I can’t think of a single thing that a goat and the number thirteen have in common, but somehow they come together to identify the per annum Avery brew. This year it’s a Weizen Eisbock with a distinct lacking of any goat or numerical flavors. Instead it takes on the character of an old fashioned dessert, from nose to mouth. The head breathes and bubbles like a kitchen sponge the color of light caramel. Beneath the outer crust the head turns into smaller, pushier bubbles with the same energy of a freshly poured Coke. A rich aroma of marshmallows, maple syrup, sweet licorice, banana taffy and Nestle’s chocolate syrup pushes its way into the nostrils and conjures images of a classic, old fashioned banana split. I remember finding this same aroma at a local diner called Gunder Toody’s, famous for its 1950’s-esque décor and doowap music selection. The flavor falls in suit with the smell, but clouds the flavors with dust and chalk more familiar in a Utah dessert than in a beer aligned to be a drinkable dessert. bb (2905), Martinez, California, USA Mar 26, 2007 Bottle. Ruby brown beer with a low off-white head. Malty/wheaty aroma. Malty/wheat/chocolate flavor. Lingering chocolate/coffee. Medium body. Low lacohol warming in background. PorterPounder (3132), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Mar 25, 2007 Ft. Myers, Fl. - Total Wines, 22 oz bomber. Dark amber pour, soft khaki head - leaves slight bubbly lacing. Exellent aroma of caramel, cotton candy, and some sweet smoked meat. Flavor is sweet, yet full-bodied. Caramel, toffee, milk chocolate - it’s all in there and blended together well. Some Christmas spices make their way into the back end. Very tasty. Mouthfeel is thick enough and the high abv is hidden well. mgumby10 (1844), Jupiter, Florida, USA Mar 23, 2007 Pours a dark amber brown with very light to no head. Smell is pretty unique, definitely can tell this is a mix of styles. Some wheat, dark malts, banana, and dark fruit. Taste is more dopplebock than wheat but a nice version of one. Very malty with a hint of caramel. Even get a little light chocolate in the aftertaste. Relatively smooth. Pretty good. LilKem (1210), Marietta, Ohio, USA Mar 23, 2007 dark brown with thin head. aromas of carmel, roasted malt, chocolate malt, white pepper, and some clove with some banana. wheat and yeast primarily dominate the flavor, with some chocolate, spice, and cloves. pretty decent. Capa (955), Yokosuka, Japan Mar 17, 2007 Poured deep brown with ruby highlights and a large tan head. Aroma was lightly toasted malt, molasses, alcohol, and spices. Flavor of molasses, roasted malt, spice and alcohol. Finishes with a nice dry warmth. Well blended, thoguh not overly complex. A solid beer, but not amazing. Would drink again, though. lovemyipas (420), sw burbs, Illinois, USA Mar 12, 2007 pours a black brown with a two finger bubbly tan head. aroma is roasted malt, a little wheat, and some alcohol with a touch of hops and dark fruit. had a medium body with descent lacing and ok carbonation. flavor is roasted malt, a little wheat, and dark fruit with a touch of hops and alcohol. as it warms there is a yeasty bread aroma and flavor. not bad i guess for my first weizen dopplebock. little bit of black licorice aroma and flavor and coffee as well. very complex especially on the second glass. definitely feel a little warmth going down and body wise. BeerFanDan17 (610), Land O Lakes, Florida, USA Mar 4, 2007 Delicious Doppelbock with all the rich and complex flavors you would expect from Avery. Similar to a Kostrizer, this dark Weizen is strong and smooth at first with dark chocolate, coffee, and malt flavors on the palate. Definitely worth a try!
