PhillyBeer2112 (2084), Orange Park, Florida, USA Feb 10, 2007 Woof. Full aroma, begins with an aroma of clove mingled in caramel, not much fruit, including banana, to speak of. Rather dark, with a surprsingly medium head. Sitting in the glass under normal illumination, it almost looks like a porter. Held to the light, you can tell its not so dark, but a deep garnet color. A bit too crystal clear however! Flavor up front is dominantly sweet, with a heavy melanoidiny munich malt palate, and then whoa - where’s the carbonation?! Hardly any, and instead there’s this massive sea of sticky sweet malt and only the slightly spicy note of weizen to provide any sort of contrast. A note of raisiny fruitiness comes to the fore at some point. I started this off somewhat cold, as cold as I’d drink a good doppelbock or weizen, but it didn’t seem to work. As I let it warm (I certainly wasn’t motivated to drain this very fast), it just got worse - the heavy malt sweetness became cloying, and a heavy alcohol burn became apparent. Any way you slice it, its an unbalanced, undercarbonated mess. grimreeser (795), Minnesota, USA Feb 9, 2007 Pours a very dark brown with a light tan head. A dark chocolately aroma with caramel in there as well, some roastiness. Nice sweetness. Don’t notice the alcohol much, but does warm. ChillCoat (1029), Concord, California, USA Feb 9, 2007 Bottle. Pours a slick black color with a light tan head. Chocolate and raisin aromas with an almost citrusy note. Thick mouth feel with a good bit of carbonation. Dry and fruity with a substantial sweetness somewhere mid-palate. Caramel, chocolate, dark fruits and even some slight banana notes. Finishes dry. Slightly hot. kramer (2406), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 6, 2007 22 oz bottle, via Secret Santa X-mas 2006. Pours a clear dark brown with a ruby glow under a one finger foamy light brown head that fell to a partial covering. Nose is heavily malty with some spicy earthy wheat, coffee, molassas, hefty alcohol, light smoke, roast, and caramel. There’s alot going on here in the aroma. Flavor presents coffee, wheat, and roast up front. Lightly spicy yet still quite sweetly malty. There’s a certain depth missing to this though, and I think that it’s the lack of yeast. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied and a little too syrupy with moderate fizzy carbonation. This was OK, and I hate to harp on the same old subject with Avery, but once again the heavy filtration detracted from this in every way. A deep brown color with a light head. A very deep spciy brew with a good malt flavor. The aroma was great and this was a very good drinking Weizen Bock. Deep in flavors and a good rich high alochol content. jgd0608 (187), Zeeland, South Carolina, USA Feb 5, 2007 Bomber. pours deep red with a thin tan head.
