JasonG (699), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Jan 20, 2007 22oz bottle: Clear, very dark ruby red color with small to medium sized light tan head. Aroma is malty, bit of black malt, fair amount of cherry, hint of burbon, bit of chocolate and vanilla. Flavor is malty, bit of chocolate and cherry, with a slightly sweet but balanced finish. pinkzambia (986), Boise, Idaho, USA Jan 17, 2007 22 oz. Bottle: Sweet, roasted caramel aroma as well as picking up on the alceeehol. The color is dark brown with a small off-white head. The feeling that I get upon taking my first sip is exactly what is found in the commercial description: "marrying the complexities of two great German traditions." I taste a lot of sweet flavors like hazelnut, alcohol, and a little furniture polish. I also sense some dry weeds and mild anise in the aftertaste. These flavors linger for quite a while. Complex and compelling. Thanks Indiana Red for hooking me up! IndianaRed (1553), Boise, Idaho, USA Jan 17, 2007 Bottle pours a clear deep brown. A small light tan head. Aromas are chocolate and wheat bread. Sweet like licorice and tootsie rolls. Easy on the hop bitterness as expected with a\some dark fruitiness as well. Slightly alcohol and a bit fumy at the end. Finishes smooth ans soft. Nice. RedHaze (370), Where the hell am I?, Nebraska, USA Jan 14, 2007 Pours a very dark brown, with a thin head that fades rapidly to a few small bubbles and thin ring, leaving behind only traces of lace.
Smell; lots of dark fruits such as grapes, plums and some mild hints of bananas. Licorice, chcocolate, caramel and some touches of coffee all come out as well.
Taste; the dark fruits are the first flavors to really jump out at me with the grapes and plums, with the bananas coming through a bit more than they did in the aroma. Caramel and chocolate malts add a nice sweetness, and the coffee adds just enough bitterness to offset the sweet. It takes a few minute for the Weiss flavors to show themselves, and on the first few sips I wasn’t sure that i really liked this all that much. But once I got used to it a bit, and let it warm up some, it definitely grew on me, and I found myself wanting more.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied and on the slick side, with very low carbonation. Drinkability is pretty high, especially since the alcohol barely makes its presence known, aside from some warming as you drink this. guzzler67 (1272), Hanover, Maryland, USA Jan 8, 2007 Dark, reddish brown appearance with a small tan head and modest lacing. Malty, fruity aroma with layers of cherry, banana and blackberries. Sweet malt taste with hints of caramel, dark fruit, molassas and multigrain bread. Hops are indistinguishable. Long lasting, sweet finish. FoolishMortal (965), San Diego, California, USA Jan 4, 2007 22 oz. bottle. Dark translucent ruby with a small light brown head. Mild alefruit, caramel, and fruity esters in the aroma. Mild toastiness with and spicy and fruity ester component. Ruddy chocolate flavors emerge in the finish with a lasting sweet alefruit. Mouthfeel is heavy, somewhat chewy. cbkschubert (1945), Cochise Co., Arizona, USA Jan 2, 2007 22 oz. bottle from Beverage House (Tucson) - Pours a brown color with a two finger thick light tan head. Light lacing. Aroma is full of esters. Flavor is lightly spiced and fruity. Also some dry caramel malt flavor comes through. Medium body and slightly bitter. A good beer. Maria (6056), Thisted, Denmark Jan 2, 2007 Its a red mahogany color and the head is huge, golden and creamy. The aroma is sweet with notes of caramel and a little fruit. The flavour is sweet, for a moment I find it very sweet, fruity, spicy and it has notes of roasted malt, licorice and the finish is long and lightly bitter. I kind of like this one, but then again it is a bit dominating in the overall impression and it should be more wheaty. 1722
