tiggmtl (4307), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Dec 31, 2006 Burnet caramel, alcohol, marzipan, some floral notes and vinous fruits in the salty aroma. Clear, dark, mahogany brown body is topped by a low tan head that recedes to cover. Sweet flavour has plenty of nutty marzipan, dark pit fruits, molasses, caramel and alcohol. Some dark malt bitterness in the finish. Medium body with low carbonation and strong alcohol warming. Bottle sampled with BeerPrince, CapFlu, frink and Oakes. ChristianSA (368), Copenhagen, Denmark Dec 30, 2006 Aroma of burned sugar, raisins, portwine, hints of Worcestershire sauce. Very dark brown with shades of chestnut. Small big bubbled head which fades away quickly. Flavor is dominated by dark caramel, prunes, sugar and alcohol. Long warming finish with some bitterness leading to a slightly watery finish. Pleasant texture and low carbonation. Overall a very nice beer with a pleasant alcohol burn in the finish. stison42 (318), Blacksburg, Virginia, USA Dec 29, 2006 Updated: Jan 21, 2007Dark brown. Very alcoholic taste, almost like church wine, but still pretty good. Had at Tulley’s in Cincinnati with the family. Poured a dark frothy color with very little head. Has the smell of molasses. The taste of molases and carmel. Very good beer. Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Dec 23, 2006 Near opaque black with a white head. Very smooth and tasteful, a fine bitterness and clear German style with some German yeast. Lots of caramel and some chocolate malt but not sweet and gladly not hopped up. Refreshing. A fine piece of craftmanship from Avery.
GaltScat (195), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Dec 21, 2006 Updated: Dec 22, 2006A little caramel head covered the darker caramel Weizen Doppelbock. The aroma was smooth caramel, coffee, and bananas. The aroma was rather mellow. Similar was the flavor; smooth mild chocolate and mild fruits. Almost no alcohol taste. Like other reviewers, I found the finish to be somewhat vinegar-like. The finish actually finished rapidly, leaving me wondering if I had even taken a sip. muzzlehatch (4427), Burlington, Vermont, USA Dec 15, 2006 22 oz bottle from some unremembered store in the midwest, October 2006; sampled at cellar temperature from a Ramstein weizen glass. One of those creamy, perfectly flat/smooth tan heads tops this dark caramel/walnut near-opaque monster; it dies slowly and leaves thick lacing.....fairly pleasant but unremarkable caramel-banana aroma with a fair bit of doughy yeasty character, kind of pasty and thick....smooth yet assertive body, lots of caramel and light yeast character but also plenty of sourdough notes adding a vinegary agressiveness to it all, touches of cherry and chocolate, quite full and naturally carbonated; alcohol is vaguely present but nicely muted, banana-clove notes also noticeable but never overwhelming....dark chocolaty touches near the finish help cut the doughiness of the yeast.....this is one of the more authentic American weizens of any stripe that I’ve had and certainly deserves credit for that; quite solid.
