Silphium (2114), Haslett, Michigan, USA Oct 12, 2006 Deep red-brown body, thin tan head. Horrifying cloying soy and honey notes taint the wet grass, spice, and banana characteristics that should dominate the aroma. Is this another ultra-sweet syrupy nightmare from Avery? Ok, the aroma’s not bad overall, but I’m pretty sensitive to the "Avery taint." The body is thankfully a bit drier, and very spicy, the esters and alcohol dominating the finish. The toasts and dark fruits complement these characteristics nicely; this is almost entering Dubbel territory. Great complexity and mouthfeel; I agree it is a touch hot. A pleasant surprise. And, with that, prospects of a nightmare diminish. tupalev (2605), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 12, 2006 Bottle shared with Hogtown Harry, Blankboy, and MDS, courtesy of Harry. Decent aroma, roasty sweet, liquorice, spice. Black, foamy head. Really rich malt taste, very sweet, a little boozy. Very drinkable. Brown sugar notes round off this very tasty brew. MI2CA (1260), Noblesville, Indiana, USA Oct 11, 2006 22oz - Aroma of chewy fresh malts, molasses and hops. Pours ruby red with a big fluffy head and great lacing. Flavor is much stronger than the aroma. First molasses, toffee, and black licorice. Then alcohol. Finished by toasted malts and the lingering remains of the "first" flavors. Palate is snappy, sticky and a bit hot. Interesting and tasty. I think I should set one in the cellar to mellow the hotness. michael-pollack (2598), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 10, 2006 22oz. Bottle: Aroma is sweet and very malty with quite strong notes of roasted malt, as well as alcohol. Yeast scent as well. Poured dark brown. Opaque. Medium tan head lasted and produced a great lacing. Flavor is very complex. Head is creamy and mixes with the malty body to produce a sweet mixture. Heavily sweet, and mildly bitter. Flavors of wheat bread, roast, and alcohol. Medium to full body. Thick, viscous texture. Lively carbonation. Long, sweet finish. Overall, a good, strong brew. blankboy (3156), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 10, 2006 Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, mds & tupalev -- courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours a very murky dark reddish-brown with an average size mostly-lasting creamy off-white head. Aroma of dark malt, dark fruit, chocolate, brown sugar, spices -- it’s a little lactic too -- pretty nice. Wow, flavour’s even better! Chocolatey along with caramel malt, yeast, brown sugar, some hops and a sweet finish. Alcohol’s well hidden. Nice thick body. The reviews for this are all over the place, good for Avery for trying something different and unique -- as for me, I really liked it. Slick (1962), Thief River Falls, Minnesota, USA Oct 9, 2006 Nice dark amber color, small tan head that had a good hang time then faded to leave a little behind. The aroma was malty with a nice roasty side some dried fruit maybe and a bit of chocolate possibly. The flavor was very nice with a nice roasty malty taste mildly sweet in the beginning with a good mild fruit and caramel taste coming on as well as a nice roasty side in the middle. The alcohol manages to stay pretty well hidden with just a hint in the tail end.Very nicely done brew and well worth having a few more which i’m glad i do. Papsoe (14613), Frederiksberg, Denmark Oct 9, 2006 (Bottle 65 cl) Clear, reddish brown with a beige head. Vinous, alcoholic aroma. Quite full-bodied with sweetish notes of dried and overripe fruit. Somewhat sweet malt and some accents of wood. No real bitterness but quite some alcohol in the finish. Quite delicate. 061006 Emil (6075), Copenhagen, Denmark Oct 9, 2006 Bottle.
