hophead75 (1945), Boonton, New Jersey, USA Jul 24, 2006 bottle. Pours a very dark brown with ruby highlights. Carbonation good for the style. Aroma is of chocolate, banana, dark fruit and malts, slight alcohol. It tastes of dark fruits and malts up front. Also has a taste of dark wheat, with a dark fruit, buttery, and lightly tart finish. jefcon (997), Arlington, Virginia, USA Jul 23, 2006 Deep and dark ruby with a lush, then receding, tan head. Bready aromas are accented with molasses and plum, peach, spice notes. Astringent on the palate, with a burn of alcohol and a slick mouthfeel. Dry finish, too, but there is a fruit and grain sweetness that accents the beer nicely. Flavors are like a sticky pudding: dates, plum, wheat and molasses. Happy anniversary to the folks at Avery! JPDIPSO (4865), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA Jul 21, 2006 Brown in color with a moderate light tan head. Fairly nice doppel aroma. A touch of alcohol distracts slightly. Lots of fruit in the nose with date, cherries, plums, bananas all in a light syrup with mace, pinch of cinnamon and brandy. Full feel, with enough zip to keep it light. Lacks some of the lighter wheat qualities of a weizen bock. Mild cocoa and dark syrup. Plenty of malt to back everything up in this one. Dry malt linger that I enjoy. Too many in this style get to thick and syrupy, but this one hits many points without getting thick and sickening. Solid effort. zug4abby (287), San Diego, California, USA Jul 21, 2006 Bottle from Holiday Wine Cellar. Pours an opaque, dark brown/black color with a small head and lots of very sticky lacing. Aroma is a lot of banana nut bread, malt and a slightly sweet stickiness. Flavor is malty and sweet with a slightly hot hint to the back end. Mild hints of sweet stickiness come through and linger on the palate. I’m not usually very impressed with Avery, but i think this was a good showing! fly (1331), austin, Tejas, USA Jul 20, 2006 Thirteen over twelve and delve deeper into goatdom whilst knowing eleven may dwell in the Maharaja to this day. Would I put this side by side with Aventinus? Well I didn’t so I’m not going to try now. Maybe later, but as for now my thoughts are in a pleasant place and I enjoyed this, so that’s good and so is Avery. GuilTTy (527), Cherry Hill, New Jersey, USA Jul 20, 2006 22oz bomber from Canals in Marlton, NJ. Hazy deep chestnut under a very tall tan head with a thin curtain of lacing. Malty aroma with banana esters, clove, caramel and a hint of smoke. Well-balanced flavors of fresh baked biscuits, toffee, more banana and mild hops atop a roasted and round malt center. Smooth and sweet finish and creamy mouthfeel with lively carbonation. A very tasty and refreshing brew that would make a great addition to Avery’s regular lineup. omhper (12154), Stockholm, Sweden Jul 20, 2006 [Bottled at Oliver Twist, Stockholm] Very dark brown, small head. Aroma of banana and burnt malt. Sweet with clean rounded mouthfeel. Plenty of medicinal esters. Near full bodied with notes of chocolate and molasses. Syrupy finish with plenty of candy, caramel and banana. Flavourful, but somewhat raw and unrefined. clockboy92 (1), USA does not count Jul 19, 2006 I expected a lot more from this beer. I have been impressed by Avery’s other releases, but this failed to meet my expectations.
Appearance - I was really excited by the appearance of this beer. The dark reddish brown color was very attractive, and there was a little bit of frothy head as I poured. The head did not lace the glass, however.
Aroma - Malt odors prevail, while fruit and alcohol seem to be there.
Taste - The wheat and fruit give this beer a sweet taste with a slight bitterness. It was hard to place the taste. As the bottle says, its a Weizen Doppelbock. There are thI guess the weizen countrered thoe sweet tones of a weizen, but the malty tones of the doppelbock. It was very drinkable, but I doubt I’d buy another one for myself.
Mouthfeel - This beer was very thin and dry. For such a high alcohol content and being a doppelbock, I expected a thicker feel.
Drinkability - This beer should be shared. 750 mL of a high ABV beer is a lot for one person. After 500 mL, the beer begins to sit heavy. I doubt that I would have another one for myself.
All in all, this is a pretty good beer. I was expecting more, since I am a huge fan of Bell’s Consecrator Doppelbock. However, the weizen tones made for an interesting experience. This one is worth a try. If nothing else, it’s an excellent way to start your evening.
