Commercial Description:
Unlucky 13? If anything, 13 has been a lucky number and year for us! Here is our version of a Weizen Doppelbock, a very rarely brewed style marrying the complexities of two great German traditions, Weiss and Doppelbock. The aroma is dominated by fruity and spicy esters produced by the German Weiss yeast strain with a dry drinkability from the wheat malt. The flavor and color are dominated by the unique specialty grains that produce the Doppelbocks flavors of fresh baked bread, toffee and cocoa, and a dark-ruby red hue. Since goats have traditionally adorned Bock labels, we chose a Rocky Mountain Goat for this Rocky Mountain Bock. Peace to all and follow your dreams! Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, malted wheat, imported German specialty grains and hops, and one unique German yeast.

Bottle. Pours a nice deep brown. Slowly de-cascading head of olive that leaves nice lacing. Aroma is, upon popping the top, like someone blew-up a gumball machine... really. Initial flavor is melted copper and stale bubblegum. As it warms, banana becomes more prominent. A rounded bready raspberry seems to imerge as well. Watery palate. Overall, I guess it’s okay. Simply lacks the assertiveness of an Aventinus.

Bottle (bomber) from Ølbutikken. Dark copper, small head. Burnt sugar, some dark fruits, no wheat character whatsoever. Medium bodied and smooth, quite sweet. Had it next to Aventinus, which kicked as with this quite crappy brew.

Hazy dark reddish brown. Creamy light tan head. Heavy malt aroma. Chewy malt texture. Thick and thirst quenching. Extremely impressive. Variety of this style is intimidating due to this beer style.

22 ounce bottle courtesy of mcbackus. Thanks! Reddish brown color with a minimal head. Very bready aroma with some banana notes. Taste is very similar with some caramel and nutty notes as well. Medium body.

A dark, dark ruby with good clarity. The head is a little on the small side. The aroma is pruney and a little tart. The flavor is hot with alcohol, and the whole thing comes across a little raw and harsh. The yeast doesn’t seem very happy in this one. A bit of green apple in there as well. Definitely not one of Avery’s better beers.

Ah, I can’t kill this one, but Avery regularly lets me down, and they surely do so again with this brew. Pour was decent, nothing special, but it gave an ok initial head (with fairly weak retention) and yielded ok lacing. The body was dark brown to black, hard to get light through. The aroma was strong caramel over top of the usual weizenbock notes of bananas, roast, spicing. The flavor was way overdone on the caramel and included some bread and plastic aspects. Disappointingly hot on the alcohol and a little too astringent, needing some age for sure. But, at these caramel levels, age isn’t going to improve this much. Mouthfeel was heavy with moderate to light carbonation.

Bottle courtesy of SS: Poured a dark black color weizenbock with a medium foamy head with average retention but good lacing. Aroma of sweet caramel malt is pretty enticing with some light clove note also noticeable. Taste of sweet caramel is a bit overpowering and hides the clove aspect of the beer which would have been enjoyable. Alcohol is slightly detectable but I had worst and beer is not fully filtrated which I ma grateful for. Overall, I would say that this is not the best of weizenbock but a very good effort nonetheless from a brewery that sometimes leave me puzzle.

Thanks Dr. Bill. The dark reddish-brown body of this brew is topped by a medium thick head with some lacing left on the glass. It’s slighttly sweet and malty with a nice banana note, an underlying roastiness and notes of dark fruit. Full bodied, smooth and a touch warming.
