Commercial Description:
Unlucky 13? If anything, 13 has been a lucky number and year for us! Here is our version of a Weizen Doppelbock, a very rarely brewed style marrying the complexities of two great German traditions, Weiss and Doppelbock. The aroma is dominated by fruity and spicy esters produced by the German Weiss yeast strain with a dry drinkability from the wheat malt. The flavor and color are dominated by the unique specialty grains that produce the Doppelbocks flavors of fresh baked bread, toffee and cocoa, and a dark-ruby red hue. Since goats have traditionally adorned Bock labels, we chose a Rocky Mountain Goat for this Rocky Mountain Bock. Peace to all and follow your dreams! Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, malted wheat, imported German specialty grains and hops, and one unique German yeast.

[bottle] Pours cloudy brown with a very small tan head. Aroma is soy sauce, malt, bittersweet chocolate. Flavor is similar to the aroma. Nice, rich mouthfeel with the perfect amount of carbonation.

Pours murky, hazy brown with ruby hints; head is tan, creamy, fluffy and mostly lasts. Nose is nice with a caramel and toffee character to add to the spicy, clovey, banana esters. The flavor shifts towards the dopplebock aspects; caramel, chocolate, nutty, slightly roasty and toasty, with the estery flavors sticking around along with a fruity character. It is a little sweet, but it is somewhat appropriate and it does do a good job of hiding the hardly noticible alcohol. Palate is medium bodied but with a soft, chewy, somewhat creamy texture. I really liked this one, but I don’t really know why it is. Avery sure has a way of creating and extending the boundaries of every style of beer. Certainly different from any beer you will try, but it will not blow you away.

Delicious Doppelbock with all the rich and complex flavors you would expect from Avery. Similar to a Kostrizer, this dark Weizen is strong and smooth at first with dark chocolate, coffee, and malt flavors on the palate. Definitely worth a try!

Pours a dark ruby brown in color. Smell is all toffee and malt. Taste is incredible, I’m really loving this beer. There is a sweetness coming through that I’m thoroughly enjoying. Smooth on the mouthfeel. I’m definitely going to have to pick up another bottle of this.

Bottle. 22oz. Pours a very dark brown with a poofy tan head. Wheat meets Starbucks meets Hershey Special Dark. Plenty of banana in the mix in conjunction with the rich java and chocolate flavors. Thick and creamy, this was a very nice sipper. Lightly sweet, drink it black just as it pours.

22 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown with red highlights. It has a bubbly light tan head that quickly goes down to a thin collar that leaves some lacing.

The aroma is grainy malt with some sweet sugary fruits, big bananas, and a little clove.

The flavor is sugary sweetness (not as bad as the Samael or Meph though) with some fruitiness and chocolate. The finish is subtle noble hops and some almost tart alcohol. As it warms, it improves - the sweetness subdues and more malt complexity comes out - chocolate, toffee, caramel, and nuts. The mouthfeel is pretty full and smooth on the carbonation.

I usually haven’t cared a lot for Avery’s bigger beers, so I was hesitant to try this. I was pleasantly surprised. It is a little sweet, but it is pretty well balanced and the alcohol is fairly well hidden (though it definitely warms the belly!). As it warmed and I drank more, I liked it better and better. I think it’s too sweet for a true weizenbock though.

Pours a dark ruby color with a thin but lasting tan head. Brandy-like aroma. Brandy in the taste as well, along with dried fruit, chocolate and coffee. Alcohol not too present in the taste, but assertive warmth after the swallow. Very interesting and delicious, but I would say it’s more of a barleywine than a doppel.

The 22 ounce bottle poured a clear dark ruby red colored beverage with a small fizzy tan head that was completely diminishing but it left some lacing on the glass. The aroma was typical of a doppelbock with loads of dark fruit and molasses notes. The body was medium-full with soft carbonation and a smooth, oily texture. The flavor starts out moderately sweet and gets sweeter toward the end of a somewhat long finish. There is also a good alcohol warmth in the throat at the end as well.
