This beer is very, very fresh. Poured out a dark chocolate brown, with red highlights around the edges. It has a decent mocha colored sticky head on it. It leaves a decent lacing down the sides of the glass also. Aromas are of toffee, caramel wheat malt, slightly roasty also. Flavors are incredible. Caramels, toffees, malts, brown sugar, cookie dough, with a hint of raisins also. Thick, rich body, chewy texture & mouthfeel. Almost a meal in a glass. Alcohol is well hidden underneath all those malts. I think I detect a decoction mash here gang. Just enough hops to balance the sweetness of the malts. Hersbrucker or Hallertau hops in the mix. Damn good beer overall. Best effort from Avery in awhile. Make this a regular offering, guys. I’m impressed. Jvittorio4187 (255), Boardman, Ohio, USA

| 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 3/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Apr 28, 2008 This is a dark! wheat bock; a peaty mahogany color. The smallish ecru head heralds mild-mannered lace leavings. Heady aromas astound with lush prune, clove, beeswax, bayleaf, bitter chocolate, gingerbread spice, and the piney-salty scents of oregano and rosemary. A sweet (tho’ not overly so) flavor overflows with superlative fruitiness: honey and framboise, deepest bittersweet chocolate, mango, black licorice, clove and cranberry… and background wit-like impressions of coriander and bitter orange, plus the comforting, chewy warmth of fresh-baked bread. Through-the-sinuses stiletto ethanol enchants and lobotomizes with gingery the warmth of 9.5 abv. Citric acidity cuts cleanly through a full, juicy-slippery palate. Exotic white pepper, cardamom, marigold, and cola aftertaste is like the afterglow of frantic, sweaty sex with your gf’s sister in a steamy-hot tent . A truly amazing beer… tactile, contemplative, intimidating, and seductive. BeerFanDan17 (610), Land O Lakes, Florida, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 4, 2007 Delicious Doppelbock with all the rich and complex flavors you would expect from Avery. Similar to a Kostrizer, this dark Weizen is strong and smooth at first with dark chocolate, coffee, and malt flavors on the palate. Definitely worth a try! Davetopay (36), Leesburg, Virginia, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jun 25, 2007 Pours thick and dense and only releases it head once reaching the top of the glass. This will quickly dissipate to leave you staring into the woody brown depth of this glorius libation. Color is of dark stained oak or molasses. The nose exhibits a decidedly round toasted malt profile with hints of vanilla, fresh cut mahogany, dried date and raisin. The mouth feel is lightly effervesent and soft without becoming syrupy as a sizable dose of wheat malt takes over for the highly tactile finish. The flavor shows big brown roasted grain, pecan pie, light wood smoke, fig and date with slightly sweet hint of english toffee. DCJack (146), Alabama, USA

This is an excellent beer, although the flavors are just a little on the harsh side. Not as smooth as I would like.
The smoky molasses is a bit strong, but overall, this is an exceptional drink.
massive aroma. It really pushes all my favorite buttons, just not as well as some others, but far better than most MrEcted1 (144), Wheat Ridge, Colorado, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jun 10, 2006 Quite possibly the best beer that Avery has brewed (AFAIK). Pours an attractive dark (I mean dark) ruby red. Not much head, but the head that does appear stays throughout the drink. For being a beer at 9.5% abv the acohol is hidden extremely well. You get the warm belly sensation like you would with most high abv beers, but as far as taste goes it’s almost undetectable. Very tasty beer. Has some chocolate in there as well as applebutter, figs, over-ripened bananas, prunes, brown sugar and some spices... actually quite complex. As far as mouthfeel is concerned this beer is perfect. This is a nice full-bodied beer, extremely smooth. Hops are present but the malt dominates and in a good way. Very good beer, I highly recommend picking this baby up. | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 8, 2008 Opaque black pour with a quarter-inch beige head. Big, malty nose full of alcohol and sweet dark fruit. Flavor is much the same, dominated by chocolate, caramel, and alcohol. Man, this is rich. Nice warming brew with a pleasantly full mouthfeel This is wonderful.
