Commercial Description:
Aviator Amber Lager was originally made exclusively for Mike Ashford's McGarvey's Restaurant in Annapolis, Maryland. The beer is a European Export style. The rich malty flavor is gently balanced with fine, delicate hops. Two-row Pale, Munich, Caramel 20 and 40 lovibond malts are used in this brew. Aviator is fermented at 48F and then at 56F. The beer is then lagered at 31 degrees for 4 weeks before filtration.

On tap GABF 02: This may be the best American lager I’ve ever had. Clear amber color, moderate floral nose, smooth palate. Starts and ends bitter. Very clean tasting with a brief, but nice aftertaste.

Draught only product found at the brewpub, and various outlets. Pours to a beautiful, bright, amber color with a tight white head that fades, and a good bit of carbonation. Nose strikes a good balance of toasty and nutty malt aroma with some herbal hop aromatics. The palate is firm with good pale, toasty, and nutty malt flavor. Body is round and smooth. Fiishes with more good malt character up front, then ends with mild herbal hop bitterness to balance. Very soid, tasty, drinkable lager.

On tap at Dominion. Pours clear golden with a white head (not really amber). Nice grassy noble hop nose. Flavor is full bodied and well rounded; nice background of caramel and a touch of toffee complimented by grassy, herbal and lemon hop character. Moderately sweet, good bitterness in the finish. Medium bodied with a smooth texture and lively carbonation. Pretty enjoyable.

Living in Annapolis, I have enjoyed numerous Aviators with raw clams, oysters, wings and the late great catfish sandwish at McGarvey’s. Nice beer unqiue to that pub, a little light for me but nice nonetheless.

Clear amber lager with a small, fizzy, white head. Malty and hoppy nose. Straw, butterscotch and floral notes. Decently balanced. A touch on the bitter side from start to finish. Light-bodied with a watery mouthfeel and lively carbonation. Short, bitter finish. Overall, a well-hopped beer with a poor malt profile. Not much to it, really.

Had this on draft at the Old Dominion Brewpub on 1-10-04. Translucent gold. Small white head. Nose is malt with very light hops and some bread notes. Tastes a little grassy and hoppy with a little malt. Decent beer.

Draught at Old Dominion Brewhouse, Washington DC
Blond color. Simple lager, but better than the regular: sweeter, softer and with a light Saaz trace at the end.
