cheapdark (2011), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 15, 2007 Appearance is clear filtered root beer. Sweeter malt hard tack candy aroma. Big 17 oz bottle, nice sample size. Taste impact is a malty fizzy beverage, in a good way. No adverse bitterness, but a friendly interesting palate of manure and fertile garden soil fills the mouth with each sip. Very complex. A fine example of a mild dark beer. A hint of 5% is apparent, certainly does not come across alky free. The session ends with dreams of alcohol laced candy while riding a unicorn. Refined, docile and whammy. shigadeyo (2210), Harrison, Ohio, USA Nov 15, 2007 11/01/2007: Ayinger Altbairisch Dunkel has a really nice clear ruby-honey color and a thick and creamy ivory head that is long lasting and creates some good lacing on the glass. The aroma and flavor are soft and mellow, but packed full of rich caramel malts along with a bit of something darker (like chocolate) and a touch of spice. It is slightly dry in the middle and has a long, smooth finish. It is also very balanced overall and just easy to drink. The palate is smooth, almost silky. This beer is just interesting enough to hold your attention and coax you into multiple glasses of it! I enjoyed it and hope to try it out of a bottle sometime...
Draught (16 oz glass) at the Winking Lizard Tavern (Crosswoods) in Columbus, Ohio. Rating #442 for this beer...
minch25 (346), Columbus, Ohio, USA Nov 7, 2007 Clear dark brown, practically no head. Little aroma. Not much to say, tastes good, malty, technically well made. And it was a "keep the glass" special @ winking lizard. goldtwins (4079), Nesconset, New York, USA Nov 6, 2007 Poured a clear dark reddish-copper color with a medium sized beige head. Sweet and full of caramel and raisins. in the aroma. The flavor is sweet, malty and toasty. Clean semi-dry finish. Light to medium body and a lively mouth feel. Dogbrick (2816), Columbus, Ohio, USA Nov 5, 2007 On draught at the Winking Lizard (glass special). This beer pours a pretty burgundy color with a medium thick light beige head that diminishes steadily. Spotty lacing on the glass. Roasted malt, nuts and dark chocolate aroma. Medium-bodied with flavors of roasted malt, toffee and dark fruits with touches of chocolate and hops. The finish is bready malt with a nice lingering roastiness. Overall this is an enjoyable brew, as are the other Ayinger beers I have tried. MikeF (528), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Nov 3, 2007 on tap.
brown, fizzy, short lived head. Much better once warmed. Nice blend of sweet fruit and malt flavors with balancing degree of carbonation. Finishes clean, mostly sweet. cking (1012), North Canton, Ohio, USA Oct 22, 2007 Solid Dunkel from Ayinger, of course I was pretty sure it would be since they have yet to let me down. Aroma has a warming buttery, smokey, milk chocolate thing going on with a good bread quality. Dark brown pour with a thick creamy lasting head, and good lacing. Filling and silky to the palate, this drinks with great ease. Very tasty with numerous layers of flavor. Fresh buttered bread and burnt molasses, chocolate malt, red grapes and over ripened bananas. Top notch lager. footy (334), scottsdale, Arizona, USA Oct 20, 2007 6/22/05. 500ml bottle. Mahogany with large tan head. Sweet Malty cookie aroma. Clean sweet malty bready flavor
