Commercial Description:
Dark chocolate in color, you can see a wonderful reflection if you hold it up to the light. It is round and soft with the warm, sweet aroma of freshly roasted malted barley. A satisfying, malty taste, with coffee-ish tones and a hint of plummy fruitiness in the finish. Complex and beautifully balanced.

Red brown pour with an off white creamy head. Nose of toffee, vanilla, plum, oak...very nice. Flavor is bready, fairly smooth on the palate, slight smokiness and dark roast as well. Easy to taste. The finish is a little thin, otherwise this is a pretty darn good brew here.

500ml Bottle $2.99 Health Mart Ayinger’s Altbairisch Dunkel poured a crystal clear caramel brown with quite a few tiny rising carbonation bubbles. A 2 finger head formed on the pour and then receded to a half finger of frothy tan head. Leaves moderate lacing after each sip. Smells of mouthwatering toasted grains and a very solid caramel backbone. A splash of cream is in the mix as well. This is a hearty smelling brew. I can pull out a very small amount of hops if I try hard enough. Taste is big on bread dough. The caramel comes through rich and slightly sweet. Nice lightly toasted grain flavor compliments things nicely. Mild creaminess comes through as well. Medium bodied and perfectly creamy. Velvety smooth mouthfeel. This is a very easy drinker. I could definately se myself sipping on these all night long with no problem. Smooth and creamy without being filling. Another winner from Ayinger. I haven’t tried one of their offerings yet that I haven’t truly enjoyed. Very good beer. 3/15/07

Aroma of caramel with a hint of cocoa. Exceedingly drinkable with notes of date in the flavor.

On tap at Ayinger Speis und Trank am Platzl, Munich. Attractive reddish-brown with a 3-finger tan head - lighter than the Celebrator. Aroma is not unpleasant but a bit underwhelming: dark fruits and a breadiness that plays off a lot of underlying sweetness, a bit of roasted malt. Taste: slightly bitter, spicy noble hop note, characteristic lagering yeast flavors, some toffee and nuts present. Dry, kind of weird finish that fades to a grainy after. Fairly light in many respects - crisp on the tongue. Quite nice but when you follow this up with a Celebrator things begin to fall into place.

This dunkel is a crystal-clear vermillion brown with a light tan head. It has an aroma of sweet malt and black pepper. It is light-bodied, crisp and dry. It is reasonably bitter and the taste is fleeting. A nice session beer.

500ml Bottle. Served too cool. When warmer, it has a warm and inviting taste. Rich and woody, and lingers. Definitely some sweetness, but not enough to make it sticky.
