dortmunder (961), Herdecke, Germany Jun 19, 2005 Bottled. Roastmalty, slightly coffeish with cocoa-like notes. Dry hop-bitter, roastmalty taste. Coffeish notes. Ends quite dry. Full body for the style with a smooth mouthfeel. Would love to have this on tap, as it is a little behind the best Czech dunkels I had fresh from tap. Great stuff. mikey (336), farmington, Utah, USA Jun 18, 2005 Poured a rich reddish-brown color producing a 1/2 inch thick head of rapidly dissipating foam. The aroma is incredible. The nose was of fresh, dark roasted malts with a hint of cocoa. The taste started with rich roasted malts, hazelnut and a hint of molasses. Hops come next nicely balancing the malt sweetness carring it through to the end. A subtle sting of espresso in the finish leave s you with the perfect mixture of sweetness and bitterness. The feel was light-medium bodied, yet creamy. This might be the best of the non-Doppelbock German beers I have sampled. This beer is fantastic and I strongly recomend this one. Tmoney99 (4652), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Jun 11, 2005 Bottle. Brown amber hue with small head. Strong malt and caramel aroma. Medium body with small bitter finish. Good brew to style. mephisto (1144), Taiwan Jun 10, 2005 bottled, brown color. mild aroma of malt, medium bodied. the flavor is subdued, w/ hint of coffee and caramel. crispy finish. Gmku (240), Asheville, North Carolina, USA Jun 10, 2005 Deep beautiful mahogany pour and a dense light brown head of foam. Big aroma of malt and caramel, flavor’s all malt with a little hops. Almost syrupy sticky and sweet. Love it. lagermonkey (597), Marietta, Georgia, USA Jun 4, 2005 Pours a deep rich cherrywood color with a dense creamy light brown head. Smells of rich malt and caramel. Bready.
Taste is the same as the nose. Bready and really malty. Some light finishing hops. Lightly sour. Rich caramel and fruity. Mouth is sweet and lightly sticky. Pretty tasty dunkel.
cvillebeer (134), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA May 28, 2005 Pours a clear deep orange-red with a dense and lasting head. Aromas of malt, malt and more malt. The flavor is smooth, with almost a touch of sour-fruitiness but a distracting metallic flavor in the finish. We shall see if this dissipates as I continue. Smooth and "drinkable" which sometimes means uninteresting, but here this is a well made beer that aims for a smooth, dark malt experience. I don’t notice that metallic flavor anymore- what is that? I have noticed it in beers before and I don’t like it. cansdap (17), Madisonville, Louisiana, USA May 26, 2005 Where oh where have you gone, my old friend? Used to be widely available in Louisiana and Texas, but now nowhere to be seen. My favorite beer of all time. Great malt body, with just the right amount of hops. Full flavor and great head retention. Although it is heavy and sweet, I could drink this till I popped.
