May 2, 2009 500 ml. bottle (2008) poured into a lager glass. Pours clear copper (not chocolate as per the commercial description) w/ a thin, fast-disappearing head. No lacing/stickiness of head. Strong apples, sweet malted barley, brown sugar in aroma, slightly metallic note as well. Notes of coffee, caramel, apples, plums, mild bitterness if at all in flavor. Finishes watery, long and sweet. Thin-Medium bodied, caramel stickiness. Fruitier than I would expect from the style, but tasty nonetheless. Nose develops marzipan upon warming w/ a lactic sourness coming through to finish w/ some smoke.

Apr 23, 2009 Pours dark amber to light brown with thin head that doesn’t last. Nose is surprisingly tepid with some light toasty brown bread aromas. Palate is toasty, a little malty, with some very light caramel. Very thin bodied and easy to drink, but not watery like U.S. macros.

Apr 13, 2009 (Bottle) Dark brown and clear. Dense, medium sized and lightly tan coloured head. Strong malty and bit roasty aroma. Medium bodied palate with medium carbonation. Malts, roastedeness, sweetness, caramell, lightly molasses and light bitterness in taste. Stronger molases flavour and some bitterness in aftertaste.

Apr 6, 2009 Bottle. Roasty malt aroma with hints of dried cherries and butterscotch. Deep clear brown with a nice tan head. The flavor is sweet with chocolate and toffee and a slightly sour after taste. Medium bodied with a thin slick mouth feel, soft carbonation. This is a smooth easy drinking dunkel, a great example of classic German brewing.

Mar 28, 2009 Nice dark brown pour, with a off white frothy head. some lacing on glass. Sweet malty aroma, taste is burnt malt,mocha and sweet raisins. Easy on tongue, nice dunkel.

Mar 26, 2009 Bottled. Dark reddish brown with tiny pale head. Dark syrupy nose, hint of metal, chewy nuttiness, raisiny fruits and little cocoa. Great, smooth flavor with bold maltiness, little raisins, cocoa and enough balancing hops. Medium bodied, quenching soft palate. A really nice dunkel, too few of them around.

Mar 25, 2009 2009 Bottle. Aroma of sweet malts with slight lemon. Appearance of light brown and almost no head. Tastes similar to Newcastle with an aftertaste of very dark malts. Very balanced and enjoyable, though for the money Newcastle might be better.
