The appearance is dark amber with an average head. The flavor is like the aroma with a touch of cardboard. The palate is typical for the style. Overall a good but not great beer. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 25, 2003 In the glass a translucent deep mahogany color, the head mastodonic in size, the texture spumescent and the color a winsome tan. As the head dissolves a satiny sheet of lace is formed to conceal the glass. Nose has hints of caramel, sweet, crisp and fresh, a treat for the senses with start lightly sweet and loaded with malt, top is middling in its feel to the palate. Finish is prickly in its acidity, the hops appropriate to the style, droughty aftertaste that is long lasting, a fine quaffing beer and a pleasure to sample. maniac (2628), Richmond, Virginia, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 15/20 | Jul 26, 2005 Malty aroma, vegetably. Reminds me a bit of chicken broth or cheap gravy and mashed potatoes. Pour was a deepish yellow/brown, with a decent head and no lacing. Flavor was big on vegetables... if I actually ate mine, I may be able to identify which ones :) A bit of maltiness as well but an overly watery palate doesn’t allow much flavor to come through. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | May 5, 2004 Bottle: Aroma is very fruity. I can smell the plums. A slight coffee smell as well. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small head. Minimal lacing. Taste is weaker than expected based on smell. Malty flavor with some hints of coffee and chocolate. Aroma, appearance, and palate are all great but the flavor is a bit lacking. Nate (2552), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 14/20 | Apr 7, 2003 Malty and a bit tangy. Caramel. Crisp and sweet hoppiness. Rye. Off-white foamy lacing head atop beautiful clear deep coppery red/brown. Medium thick watery body and medium carbonation. Nice and malty. Not too sweet. Nice nutty finish and after. Good balance of sweet malt and bitterness. An enjoyable dunkel. dwyerpg (2537), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 30, 2005 Aroma was of malts and licorice. Dark amber body with small head that settled to a thin layer on top of beer. Cherry fruit flavor that was also rich. Left fruty aftertaste on the palate which was good. Decent beer.
