Commercial Description:
Dark chocolate in color, you can see a wonderful reflection if you hold it up to the light. It is round and soft with the warm, sweet aroma of freshly roasted malted barley. A satisfying, malty taste, with coffee-ish tones and a hint of plummy fruitiness in the finish. Complex and beautifully balanced.

Auburn with a tan head. The nose is malty with light citrusy notes and a touch of smoke. Fruit in the nature of fresh hops at the end of the nose. The beginning is smokey sweet. The middle gets bittersweet with a good firm, but mild citrusy hop bitterness. The smoke comes through again towards the end blending nicely with the hop bitterness. Nicely balanced and tastey dunkel.

Dark amber w/ big tan head. Toasted malt aroma w/ caramel & herbs. Medium-full bodied. Rich malty flavour w/ toast, bread, caramel, toffee, coffee, & raisins, a slight oak-ish sourness, and very bitter finish.

Tap at Ayinger resturant in Munich on 9-29-07. The menu called it the "old dark Bavarian". Dark clear chestnut with tan head. Bready, yeast, woody, roasty aroma. Lively carbonation and medium body, but a little thinner than I expected. Not as sweet and malty as the festbier. More mellow and full roastiness. moderate bitter finish. Not too impressed.

Clear ruby with brown streaks below a thin, tan head. Sweet, malty aroma of chocolate, nuts, caramel, cinnamon, toasted grains and brown sugar. Perhaps a bit of dried fruit as well. Very mild hop presence in the nose, edging in at the back of the class, trying to avoid making a scene. An average body--not too thick, but leaves the tongue wholly satisfied. The flavor profile does indeed continue to show that sweet, clean malts are the dominate force for this beer. From beggining and through the middle, it’s all malt. And just as you begin to think you’ll ride this out to the end, the subtle hop character comes out and gives the sweetness a touch of earthy, spicy bitterness with which to interact and experience. Ultimately, this is never going to blow your socks off, but it’s going to be a damn fine, pleasing beer, through and through.

January 12, 2003 Pours a light brown/ruby color with a light, quickly dissipating head. Toffee, caramel, bread, biscuits, cookie dough. A touch of yeast as well. Pleasant. I need to try some more dunkels to gain some experience. 6/3/8/4/14 = 3.5.

Pours dark brown. Nose of dark roasted coffee and wet hay. Medium sized froth/hangtime. Nice effers. Flavors of cocoa, coffee, malted leather. Finishes dry. Overall: Not my favorite Dunkle.

500 ml bottle. Dark brown and crystal clear.Tall merengue-like white head. Slightly oxidized aroma, probably caused by the beer being past its best before date about a couple of months. Dark malty grainy oxidized aroma. Smooth texture. Malty rich grainy flavours. Little bitterness. What hops is there is nicely balanced by the malts. Chewy and very drinkable.

Dark copper colour, small lasting head. Thick malty aroma, with clean balanced flavours of light chocolate and coffee. Dry, bitter, lasting finish.
