| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 24, 2008 POured a dark brown color with almost no head? Aroma was really sweet and malty, hints of chocolate and roasted malts come through. Flavor was really dull, just plain sweet dunkel, nothing oustanding here, also a bit metallic as well. guzzler67 (1283), Hanover, Maryland, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 29, 2008 On tap at the corner tavern on Edgewood. Poured a deep brown color with a bid of an auburn tint. Flavor was big wheat and bread. Chewy malt profile was followed nicely by a faint hop bitter finish. Typical and expected yeast aromas as per the style. Very drinkable. heykevin (1269), Iowa City, Iowa, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 26, 2001 Wonderful dark color, sweetish malty aroma backed with some hops. Flavor is as good as a I’ve in a dark lager of its strength. Caramelly, roatsty, and slightly sweet, but never cloying. A winner. wunderbier (1267), Tampere, Finland
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 3, 2003 Updated: Nov 5, 2005Rerate: 5-11-2005. Bottle, lager glass. Thick, rich and creamy off-white head sits on a robust light maroon hued beer that tends to a dark amber where the glass thins. Effervescent carbonation replenishes the head. An absolute looker, wow. Immensely rich malt aroma: cookies, treacle, toasted dark bread, molasses and a touch of semi-sweet chocolate. Ever so soft floral hops. Intriguing hints of strap leather. Delicate notes of dark raisins, port, tobacco, vanilla and honey. Wonderfully complex from what is assuredly a simple malt bill and a clean yeast. Clean and firm malt sweetness is offset by a very light acidic tang the the front of the mouth. Finishes much the same with the addition of a soft floral hoppiness. There’s quite a nice transition of aromas to flavor—not much is left out. Perhaps a bit less sweet than the aroma indicates. Smooth and velvety mouthfeel is of moderate substance and is accompanied by a well-suited, lively carbonation. Amazing how such a malt-focused beer can come across so drinkable and non-cloying without being watery. Fantastic. Wow, I used to be a beer idjit.
Confirms my belief that I’m just not a huge fan of lagers. Very rich malt profile; lighter than the color would make you believe. Funny aftertaste dries out the mouth. Rerate 8/5/03: Great cookie / caramel malt profile, but not much else. Could do with a little more hops or some spices. My original rating stands. MI2CA (1266), Noblesville, Indiana, USA

Pours transparent red-brown with medium head and good lacing. Flavor is toasty, earty, malty, with barley, sprouts, and nuts. Palate is kind of thin and sticky. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Apr 9, 2003 Just had the Maibock 3 days ago, this taste very similiar to me now. Dark in color, with a medium size head. Taste of carmel malt, fairly sweet, very little little hops. Ayinger must drink their coffee with lots of sugar, I swear taste sweet taste is much stronger than anything resembling coffee. Nice brew though!
