Nice enough looking dunkel poured in the glass chesnut brown with a nice large foamy white head..leaves great lacing.
Nice malty aroma.. milky , chocolaty..some hop aroma in back.
Taste is very sweet to begin with then darker ,bitterer tastes take hold..hop aftertaste..good but to "fizzy"
I did not enjoy the mouthfeel of this beer..its too carbonated.
apart from the carbonation level..this is a nice drinkable dunkel.

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 29, 2003 Amber in color with a lumpy beige head. Aroma was of caramel and raisin....notes of tobacco too. Taste was much the same, a little meatiness with some coffee in the finish. AleDrinker (1090), Sunnyvale, California, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 3/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 10, 2005 Pours red with tan head. Very sweet malty aroma. Flavors very interesting and complex. Took a few sips for my palate to adjust since I was just drinking ayinger ur-weisse, a very different brew. Big nutty flavor, quite dry considering the sweet aroma. Not what I was expecting. Leaves a strange aftertaste in my mouth that reminds me of blood. Not appealing. I hope they haven’t had any accidents in their brewery lately... Tried it again chilled quite cold. The bloody flaw no longer comes out. Thick smooth body. Still nothing special. MAP (1089), Lakewood, Ohio, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 3, 2005 Vrey attractive glassy red amber color with a thich foam head. The aroma is strong of malt sweet characters, some fruit and alcohol. I would have expected this to be higher than 5%. There is a lot of caramel and roasted scent to this, as well as a bit of cherry. Flavor falls off a bit in my opinion. Some metallic tastes come through a heafty malt body. THe palate however is pretty enjoyable, smooth all around. A good malt and fruit blend makes for one tastey beer. csbosox (1085), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 23, 2005 500ml bottle. Tasted in a 20oz lager glass. 47°. Pours dark red, almost brown. 1/2" of white head that leaves quickly. Aroma is all malt, sweet and nutty. Taste is sweetish malt, with some nuttiness, woodiness, and hints of coffee and fruit. The finish is of roasted malt. The mouthfeel is pretty good for this type of beer. I would love to drink this out of a huge stein in a German beer hall so that I could connect with my German roots. This is good, but probably not a beer style that I would generally drink. barleyPops (1081), Quad-Cities, Illinois, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 20, 2005 bottle. medium colored brown ( I can see light through my glass ) with a nice looking tan head. commercial description is dead on! roasted malt, plums, toffee and just a hint of coffee. a very nice and well done dunkel. kujo9 (1079), North Ridgeville, Ohio, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 13/20 | May 29, 2003 Copper body w/a very light beige head. Very roast aroma compared to other aromas, lightly caramel and lots of munich malt. Very clean w/ no hop or fruitiness. Roast flavor very apparent as is the Munihch malt; Very clean and dry finish and lightly roasty aftertaste w/ none of the plummy flavors touted by the commercial description. But who knows how long this has been on the shelf, although it's not oxidized. Mouthfeel is appropriate to German lagers, very medium/light bodied and dry M/F, but not astringent. Moderate carbonation. Nice quaffer when fresh, but not so much if aged. I'd like to have this on tap or in a very fresh bottle to rate like it should be rated. obguthr (1078), Poquoson, Virginia, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Apr 26, 2008 Molasses and heavily roasted malt aroma, which approaches that of dog food. Very clear brown, with a thick light tan head. Very malty and kibbly flavor. Probably good with stew, but just a bit too similar to Alpo.
