Feb 18, 2008 500ml brown bottle. Brownish red (chestnut) pour with a big bubbly, foamy tan head. Rings of lacing stick to the glass. Malty aroma with some nut, a hint of roasted malt and mocha. Flavour has some malt depth - medium roasted malt notes, some toffee-like sweetness. End has mild roast/hop bitterness. A little nutty malt aftertaste. Soft bodied with mild carbonation. Probably the best dunkel I’ve had. I will be returning to this one often.

Jul 16, 2008 Updated: Aug 30, 2009500mL bottle. Pours chestnut colored, capped with a thick tan head. Aroma of sweet malt, caramel, light chocolate and toffee. Flavor is primarily cocoa, with nuts, sweet malt, grain, some caramel, a little smoke, and rye. Creamy mouthfeel, with substantial carbonation. Very quaffable and tasty.

Feb 24, 2007 Pours a toasty dark amber with a big tan head, thinning rapidly, probably from my eating. The nose is sweet, really really sweet. Sticky sweet malt, very heacy on caramel and toffee. A hint of chocolate-like roast. Theres some fruit too. The palate is very middling for a lager. Not refreshing and liquidy, yet not full of substance. It’s good on the carbonation front, and nice, but just not to style. The flavors are a bit better. Still very very very sweet. Big toffee, a little bit of butter, some lite chocolate and roast. The finish is creamy and smooth, the aftertaste has an aspartame like sweetness to it. Not bad, but not quite my cup of tea, this needs something more than these subtle haulertau-like hops to balance it out.

Oct 30, 2008 500 ml bottle in Paulaner half mas. Dark brown with lasting head and lace. Roasted hazelnut aroma. Roasted malty nutty earthy grassy flavors with clean finish. Medium body and medium-low carbo. Nice mouthfeel. Delicious. Hard to imagine a better dunkel.

May 14, 2006 the fella that served me this knew quite a bit about ayinger. i dont really have anything to say about this beer at this juncture, but i like ayinger’s stuff a lot so i bet i’ll be revisiting before long.

Aug 17, 2002 I was slightly disappointed by this beer. The color,smell, and type are all build-up for a mildly disappointing taste. Still, a good beer. I was just expecting much more.
