There is too much roastiness to the flavor to be appealing. This beer has all the shortcomings of a lager (thing and fizzy) and seems to overcome it by dropping a dusky chocolate malt on top. This is like a bottle of oil and vinegar to me...it just doesn't mix. Jblauvs (619), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA

Mouthfeel very smooth, roast malt flavor, but flavor is not as full as suggested by the aroma.wonderfully balanced. smooth and drinkable, a good dunkel. Not really any catfood detected. | 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jul 14, 2009 Pouring a frothy tan head of two fingers’ depth above a VERY dark yet clear amber body, a rather mild aroma of spice and some hops was detected. The taste was both malty and spiced, along with a mouthfeel that was sadly thin and watery until the last third of the glass when things became more "proper". Finish was sweet. dirkules (613), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 9, 2009 A- Pours a dark red/husky brown hue, head is a few fingers’ of white creamy foam with good retention, moderate lacing
S- Nose is of moderately sweet caramel malts, a touch of coffee, chocolate, brown sugar, and roastiness
T- Initial taste is of roasted malts dominated by caramel and chocolate flavors, progresses to slight hop bitter/dryness and grains, finish is brief, overall very well-balanced
M- Light/medium-bodied beer, watery texture, carbonation is a bit amped up and biting, little residual on the palate
D- 5%abv means this is one smooth-drinking session beer, I really like the taste profile and aromas from this Dunkel style yesyouam (609), Fairport, New York, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 15, 2007 This dunkel is a crystal-clear vermillion brown with a light tan head. It has an aroma of sweet malt and black pepper. It is light-bodied, crisp and dry. It is reasonably bitter and the taste is fleeting. A nice session beer. OD40oz (603), Box Elder, South Dakota, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | May 17, 2005 Very dark amber color, almost brown. The head was a slight tan frothy, creamy one. Great taste, very smooth with an a hint of caramel in the taste. Slightly roasty nose and taste. Very good I would try this again anyday. Funknmilla (603), Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Aug 9, 2008 Bottle...medium brown with amber highlights--tan fluffy foam...has a funky skunky stink to it initially...along with molasses....uck sour weird stank, but I keep smelling it...light sour malty flavor..toffee undertones--a mild biter in the finish---light effervescent mouth feel...spotty lacing--slight sweet in front and mid-palate--not too many dimensions here, a little muddled cherry, raisin, and distinct prune when I swish it in my mouth---a little sticky on the lips--doesn’t wow me, but I would drink again
