Commercial Description:
Dark chocolate in color, you can see a wonderful reflection if you hold it up to the light. It is round and soft with the warm, sweet aroma of freshly roasted malted barley. A satisfying, malty taste, with coffee-ish tones and a hint of plummy fruitiness in the finish. Complex and beautifully balanced.

Dark and rich colored...but with a thin body. Roasted flavor. Easy finish and easy to drink.

Dark copper appearance with an attractive, off-white head. Roasted malt, chocolate, toffee aroma. Complex taste, with alternating flavors of spices, coffee, chocolate and fruit. Very smooth. Pleasant aftertaste.

6/25/03, draft, Munich. I had the privilege of sampling this one at the lovely little restaurant/biergarten attached to the Ayinger brewery. This arrived at the table clear and garnet-brown with a large, off-white head. The aroma was of sweet, dark roasted malts, molasses cookie and cardamom hops. Sweet malty flavor, rich and mellow. Deliscious dark beer with coffee notes and a lingering bittersweet finish. Smooth, round mouthfeel and great lacing from the top to the bottom of the glass.

This beer pours clear and dark amber in color from the 500 ML bottle and produces a compact off-white head with some excellent lacing. The light aroma is of dark roasted malt and faint floral hops. I found a malty sweetness in the initial flavor, with hints of raisin or plum and traces of coffee or caramel mid-palate. At the start, the texture of this beer seems somewhat thin, but the long finish balances this beer pleasantly with a enjoyable hop dryness and smooth mouthfeel and roundness. This is an excellent and quite refreshing dark lager.

500ml bottle. Beautiful pour...thick rocky head, frantic craze of carbonation, beauty of a wooden brown color. Smells nice & malty w/ a light mix of fruit and nuts...Malty, nutty flavor is smooth & slightly sweet...body is light, making for a very tasty session beer. I think Ayinger might be one of my favorite German breweries.

This is one of my favorite Ayingers. Deep brown color with a frothy thick head. Malt that is front to back in the aroma, repeats in the flavor. Just enough sweetness, but doesn't over do it. Worth seeking out as it's a real fine Dunkel.

bottled: this one pours light brown with a tan head that disipated quickly, not alot of co2. nose is mostly malty, not alot up the nares. taste is sweet and light crystal malt, choc malt. one of the most sweet and light dunkels i have ever had. good, but i cant imagine drinking many of them at once. needs a little more bite for me.

Bottle
Ruby dark-brown color with creamy off-white head. Light roasted aroma. Typical (delicious) dunkel taste: smokey roasted malt. Finish is short but pleasant. Another excellent beer from Ayinger. (6/5/8/5/16 4.0)
Re-rated, bottled (BB 03/2005)
Chesnut brown, good creamy off-white head. Strong nose with barley, rye bread and redcurrant juice (similar to Silly Saison!). Balanced, roasted malty dunkel. (6/4/7/4/14 3.5)
