Toasty malted candy aroma and a hint of sweet yams. Wheaty malt and plum fruit flavors. Some residual sweetness. Palate is somewhat fizzy but smooth. A solid beer but lacking in depth. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 3, 2005 Vrey attractive glassy red amber color with a thich foam head. The aroma is strong of malt sweet characters, some fruit and alcohol. I would have expected this to be higher than 5%. There is a lot of caramel and roasted scent to this, as well as a bit of cherry. Flavor falls off a bit in my opinion. Some metallic tastes come through a heafty malt body. THe palate however is pretty enjoyable, smooth all around. A good malt and fruit blend makes for one tastey beer. cb (809), Wheat Ridge, Colorado, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 1, 2003 Aroma of malt and grains, slight floral hops and grapefruit. Banana and clove with raisin smells with a nice dose of yeast. Average fizzy beige head that vanishes after a few minutes. Clear carmel red color. Acidic and sour flavors at first followed by a short acidic finish. Easy on the palate and semi watery but easy to drink. Soft carbonation with a slightly astringent finish. Overall a very straight forward dunkel with nice complexities. Refreshing and easy to drink even with the interesting aroma. Sham (1846), Seattle, Washington, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 1, 2004 Brownish pour with a foamy white head. Some lacing. Roast malts, some caramel, like the description says, just a hint of plum hiding about in there. Malt stands out the most in the flavors, followed by a mellow blend of bitter hops, and a bit of the coffee-ish mentioned. The caramel is there, but not in any significant amounts. Full bodied, malty palate, finishing with a hoppy bitterness. Good dunkel. Kasteelfreak (341), Fallbrook, California, USA

Might even be good on a hot summer day. Smells and starts like a dopple bock but finishes like a pale ale. Very good but not great. Has an identity crisis. JK (2961), Richfield, Minnesota, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 2/5 | 15/20 | Dec 8, 2006 This was very good. Light maltly aroma that reminded me of a Vienna. Black and a small head; nothing remarkable about the appearance. Flavor was a pleasant surprise, it had bitter malt and more smoke than I have ever picked up in this style, so much so it might fairly be called a smoked beer. Looking at the score I shouldn’t have been expecting anything unpleasant, but this greatly exceeded my expectations. brownaler (379), Topsail Beach, North Carolina, USA
