boilers (12), USA May 12, 2009 Aroma: Strong raisin aroma, malt focused
Appearance: Fine light brown head, nearly opaque with ruby highlights.
Flavor: Roasty, malty flavor with a well balanced dry finish.
Palate: Medium to low carbonation, hint of alcohol presence, medium but satisfying body.
Overall: Very drinkable and well balanced. This would go down easy a half liter at a time. viet959 (68), , Georgia, USA May 10, 2009 Tested Ayinger Celebrator & Aventinus Doppelbock together. Pours brown with small light brown head, it’s amber if held to the light. Aroma - Clove, bread, banana, caramel malts. Taste - cloves, dark chocolate, a little bit of hops, licorice. Overall - Aroma is not as impressive as Aventinus Doppelbock, it’s got a thinner mouthfeel and is lighter and has more chocolate malts and licorice taste. Much more refreshing than "AD." It’s a real tough decision but I think I’d go with Ayinger Celebrator as a winner though both are great beers. Aventinus is just too strong on the cloves and it cover most of the other flavors, although the smell if Aventinus is better. But in the end you drink the beer more than smelling it. DarkBeerReign (10), Rhode Island, USA May 6, 2009 One hell of a beer. It was smooth and creamy, dark black, and very well done. My only complaint is a sweetness to the brew which makes the beer a little too rich for me to drink more than one bottle. FedorStout (16), Anaheim, California, USA May 5, 2009 My favorite German beer so far. Beer is a dark brown with a thin head. Great smelling beer. Taste has good amount of smoke roasted and a little bit of coffee. Great beer just the kind of beer Uter from the Simpsons would drink. noompa (130), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 2, 2009 On tap @ the Map Room. Very deep brown w/ a dense, eternal tan head. Complex roasty aromas of coffee, citrus, brown sugar, roasted malts and much more. Malty, sweetish flavor w/ caramel, alcohol, toast. Beautiful full, buttery palate. Best doppelbock that I have had to date. joeyplush (328), Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania, USA May 2, 2009 Great color - like the ruby hints, but don’t like the thin head. Roasted, earthy and malty aroma - very nice. Flavor has hints of licorice, and is otherwise malty - character is very close to a stout. Excellent palate, good roasted lingering flavor. ScottyP (314), Brentwood, Tennessee, USA May 2, 2009 Pours a dark pour with small khaki head. Aroma. Roasted malt aroma with notes of nut, apple?, some hops. Very complex aroma. Roasted malt taste, some fruityness (apple anyone?) with smokey bitter finish. Great balance! Solid beer with a surprise at every turn. Butters (1622), Virginia, USA May 2, 2009 Bottle shared with barrios courtesy of scottyp. Clear dark brown pour with ruby highlights and wispy off -white head. Nose of rich honey, brown sugar, apple, and many other things. Flavor is much the same. Medium body with a semi-silky texture This beer is an absolute delight.
