minch25 (346), Columbus, Ohio, USA Apr 19, 2009 2006 bottle. Had this back then, but never put in a rating; these bottles have been sitting around in the basement since. Dark brown, light-medium tan head. Very malty aroma - nuts, cherry pie and crust. Lightly oxidized? A little scary. Core of nutty bitterness, water. Just barely there fruitiness that I don’t remember showing 3 years ago. In a nutshell, very old world beer, evokes some of the belgian Trappists. You can almost taste the history and tradition in this beer. A lot of quality here, though I should say I enjoyed it more when first starting into craft beer. I’d like to try this side by side with a fresh bottle at some point. Now the flavor compares with Abbaye des Rocs Grand Cru, Slaapmutske Christmas, Winterkoninkske, etc., if memory doesn’t fail me. I can’t quite tell if this bananaish aftertaste is due to the beer or the banana I ate beforehand. Ceebs25 (217), Naperville, Illinois, USA Apr 18, 2009 11.2 oz bottle (been saving this one to rate for a good day to celebrate). Lots of really good malt notes on the aroma. Sweet tootsie rolls, brown sugar cookies, some minor roasted nut, a bit of mild dark fruits, and mellow grassy hops. Pretty pour with a good medium colored cream head, a thicker looking body, crimson rust in color. Upon tasting, first noticed is the amazing balance with a wave of rich malts coming on strong in the beginning, mellowing out toward the finish, blending with a great grassy citrus bitter. Very smooth and full of the flavor the whole way through with never an off moment, and never too much of anything. Flavor notes again include a good variety and well put together set of malts with roasted sweet toffee and caramel, minor licorice, light nutty brown sugar cookie, minor apple and other mild fruits. A great celebration beer, a great session beer, and really just a great beer in general. fluffy (229), Florida, USA Apr 18, 2009 on tap at Tank’s Tap Room in Tampa. color is dark red/black with no real head to speak of. aroma is coffee and alcohol. flavor is strongly cocoa and and floral spices. more bitter finish than i expected it to be with a bit of licorice or anise aftertaste. a good balance. maxpizzo (44), Italy Apr 14, 2009 dark red/yellow colour with creamy head.low aroma of chocolate. taste of roasted malt, chocolate, coffe, hop flowers.finishes moderately bitter DuffManSW (283), Riverside, California, USA Apr 13, 2009 Bottle from Bevmo.... Dark dark brown with one finger head that fades to nothing. Probably would have gave a 4 or 5 on appearance if the head stuck around. Smells like rootbeer, licorice and some booze... Taste is more of the same, sweet and finishes nice.. Very good beer I’m glad I picked this one up lumpsowers (235), Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA Apr 12, 2009 Updated: May 19, 2009Dark pour, nice head and lace. Big malty alcohol out front, with a candy caramel or chocolate flavor rushing in. Low carb, but is almost a stout, very dark and thick, a liquid chocolate bar. Yum! Much, much better on tap than the bottled version.
ChapelThrill (26), California, USA Apr 10, 2009 Bottle - Bottle Barn in SR. Very dark beer with a slight deep red tint. Bready, smoky chocolate aroma. Bland start, but stronger finish. Not much carbonation. Smooth, with tastes of burnt coffee, chocolate, and slight sweet fruit. Good beer.
