sja14 (105), Ohio, USA Feb 15, 2009 This beer is as good as it gets. Pours dark brown. Caramelly and smokey with some chocolate hints. Tons of different flavor. One of the best beers I have ever had. jamvin23 (162), chicago, Illinois, USA Feb 15, 2009 Bottle. Pours with a a nice thick light colored head which laces the glass. A great beer with slightly sweet malt flavors and a dry finish. jumpjet2k (137), Austin, Texas, USA Feb 14, 2009 12oz bottle in a snifter. Pours a murky brown with a thin head. Funny - I swear I’ve had Celebrator before that’s been less dark with a much fuller head. Great dark nose of coffee, fruit, chocolate, and a little tobacco. Mildly bitter, with lots more of the fruit and a very slight lingering bitterness. Just the right level of carbonation for a smooth palate. Tasty stuff. UnholyBrewing (448), Melbourne(Mulgrave), Australia Feb 14, 2009 ...bottle. Had this a while back in Florida. Poured a very dark brown with a nice tan head that lasted, with lacing. On the nose was dark roasted malt, dark dried fruits, caramel and coffee. Flavors were similar, with the addition of smoke and hops. FInished dry, with a weird smoky aftertaste. I was slightly disappointed in this, but the flavors just weren’t for me. True to style, but I thought it was unbalanced. SeanMacGC (233), Dublin, Ireland Feb 12, 2009 Bottle, 330ml, Trappist goblet. Pours rich, dense and dark mahogany, with tenacious lacing. Dark fruits, molasses and liquorice on the nose. Very smooth on the tongue, with sweet malts and caramel surfacing, amply rewarding the palate. Great doppelbock. WakeandBake (422), Greenville, Michigan, USA Feb 11, 2009 Bottle. A very dark brown, almost black, with a big creamy light brown head. Outstanding malty aroma with nutty roastiness, dark chocolate, caramel and some dark fruits. Flavor is sweet, earthy, rich, and malty with chocolate, some coffee, some roast. A caramelly sweet finish with mild notes of spicy hop bitterness and wood smoke that linger at the dry finish. Full-bodied with a velvety mouthfeel ,Really great. A very complex malty treat that I would like to have again.
paiste2002 (148), Saugus, California, USA Feb 9, 2009 Pours a dark amber with a huge off white head that falls off to a sticky white lace around the glass. Aroma is roasted malt, caramel and dark dry fruit. Flavor is bready caramel maltiness, dark fruit, raisins, some slight hop spiciness in the finish. BrotherGrendel (551), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Feb 9, 2009 A- Pours a dark brown to black hue with garnet highlights, head is tan and frothy that is mostly diminishing, minimal lacing
S- Very rich and complex aroma captures tones of dark fruit, roasty and caramel malts, some breads and hints of alcohol
T- Initial taste is bread and caramel malts mixed with dark fruits, coffee and syrupy molasses, light smoke and pepper and a hint of bitter hops in the background, slight alcohol presence in the finish, wonderfully balanced with different levels of flavor as the drink progresses
M- Medium-bodied beer, good carbonation, oily texture coats the mouth and tongue
D- Smooth and rich doppelbock that is easy to drink at almost 7%abv, this is a well-known offering with a great reputation that is well-deserved, I would definitely pick this up again in the future
