malrubius (969), Valley Stream, New York, USA Feb 5, 2009 12 ounce bottle in tulip. Dark brown with fizzy head and lasting ring. I wonder how old this is. Toasted caramel woodsy portlike aroma. Taosted carmel brown sugar molasses sweetness with nie rounding bitterness in the finish. Medium body and medium carbo. Very nice doppelbock, though I’m not sure why this one is rated so much higher than others like Andechs and Maximator. I think I need to try to get a fresher bottle. wyzzywyz22 (754), Wirral, Merseyside, England Feb 2, 2009 Bottle, Carringtons, Chorlton. Blimey this is popular here. I wasn’t completely blown away by this though as I was hoping I would be. Indisputably its a fine example of the style, but it didn’t leave me craving another straight away and I left feeling a tad underwhelmed. Malt heavy, dark fruity aroma. Creamy, smooth mouthfeel with flavours of more malt, prunes, raisins, chocolate and a burntness..Probably one of the best German beers I’ve tried. I’ll leave it at that. Rustyham (545), miami, Florida, USA Feb 2, 2009 Extremely long lasting caramel flavor with roasted malts. One sip will last about five minutes, so take your time. This great warmth is counteracted by a slight cooling flavor, maybe grapes. The only improvements I can think of would be to slow down on the smokiness and darken the color somehow. Other than that, this is a great beer. jkwalking05 (1483), Arlington, Texas, USA Jan 31, 2009 Dark brown nearly black color with a creamy head and ruby highlights. Aroma is strongly toasty maltiness. Taste of rich roasted maltiness is complimented nicely with a slight hoppiness in the back of the throat.
discogoatboy (15), , Florida, USA Jan 30, 2009 Overall I would have to say this was a great beer. It had a nice mix of coffee and fruity flavors. JaBier (1130), Capital City, Ohio, USA Jan 28, 2009 12oz bottle aged one year. Pours darkest brown with a medium khaki head. Lots of malt in the nose with chocolate, lager yeast, fruit, coffee and nuts. Sweet flavor up front with some oak and a touch of vanilla followed by a hoppier nutty finish. Have to try a fresh one or better yet on tap and compare. merc172000 (1), Midland, Texas, USA does not count Jan 26, 2009 This beer reminds me of sweet soy sauce if I drink more than one of them. As far as double bock’s go, I don’t think you can beat the Paulaner Salvator. BeerBunker (607), Burbank, Illinois, USA Jan 21, 2009 Pours dark brown with minimal white head. Heavy carbonation. Aroma is of malt, chocolate, caramel, candy sugar, and alcohol. Taste is of roasted malt, chocolate, caramel, candy sugars, spice, and alcohol. Lingering burnt malt taste. Mouthfeel is thick and malty. One of the few doppelbocks I like.
