f351c4v (404), Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 20, 2009 Can’t believe I haven’t rated this yet... Pours a deep brown color with a large tan head. Sweet, roasted malt aroma, toffee, SKOR bar. Big body, sticky, very malty. Sweet candy sugar, mixed with caramel and light chocolate. A standard by which others are measured. Skidds (252), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Jan 20, 2009 Pours a medium to dark brown/mahogony. Tasted was strong malts, toast, molasses, caramel, coffee. Alcohol well hidden compared to others of this style. Awesome beer. Ornament went on the X-Mas tree. ljstephenson (111), Lawton, Oklahoma, USA Jan 19, 2009 Updated: Jun 27, 2009Mahogany pour with a large off-white head, sugary and malty aroma, flavor is extremely malty, strong showing of molasses and caramel with dried fruit, perfectly balanced, very oily feel, finishes super sweet. Block (363), West Lafayette, Indiana, USA Jan 19, 2009 Unfortunately from a bottle. The aroma is still intense of dark sweet malts. Strong dark malt flavor without overpowering coffee or roastedness. Molasses, caramel, honey, and some figs. whatalesya (20), , North Carolina, USA Jan 17, 2009 Pours a deep reddish brown with glints of ruby. Thick cream colored head that dissipates to about ¼” and lingers Smells of molasses, coffee, with a whiff of alcohol. Smooth on the palate, almost creamy. Taste is molasses, toasted bread, coffee, very faint dried fruits, with a nice touch of hop bitterness, but very well balanced. Modest carbonation. Hint of dryness. Nice lingering touch of sweetness. Top notch! DruncanVeasey (2690), The Penguin’s Arms, Europe, Warwickshire, England Jan 11, 2009 Bottle from Arden Wines. Cappuccino piled on mahogany, ruby glints. Sticky Xmas pud aroma with fig, prune, chocolate, resiny hopcone, vanilla, cask wood, lactic hints, locust bean, liquorice. Mouth takes on an extra dimension of dark bittersweet prune , liquorice, yeast extract and malt loaf fruitiness balanced out with drying burnt and bitter hop notes. Fat but unsticky and impressively dry. Sweet-BITTER. Thick like milk and gently warming. Hints of smoke, tobacco and chocolate after the swallow. Not sure I could session this by the litre. Big, rich, serious beer. With a plastic goat dangling from the neck. Respect. lithy (1600), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Jan 7, 2009 Dark earthy brown with a thin lasting tan head. Big chocolate and smoky aroma. Taste is more unsweetened chocolate, caramel, sweet fruits, prunes, raisins and very bready. The finish is smoky and sweet caramels. ChainGangGuy (2523), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Jan 4, 2009 10 oz. - $4.75 at The Porter Beer Bar in Atlanta, Georgia.
Appearance: Clear, dark brownish-red body with a thin, very thin, white head.
Smell: Sweet-smelling, raisin-packed aroma full of heavy caramel overtones. Slighter hints of fresh grain and unsweetened chocolate.
Taste: Sweet, caramel-covered grains followed by tons of raisin fruitiness. Minor chocolate hint. A few gingerbread crumbs. Light spicy hops and bitterness. More alcohol than you’d expect from 6.7% creeps into the semi-sweet, fruity finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-plus carbonation. Sticky mouthfeel.
Drinkability: Ayinger’s Celebrator Doppelbock, while we’ve had some wonderful times together, isn’t exactly my favorite d-bock out there. I feel this way no matter how many little plastic goats it gives me.
