marton504 (10), USA Mar 10, 2008 A great doppelbock. Has nice body with a lovely malty taste. A great finish, the taste melts in your mouth. Would be hard to improve on this beer. Beer2000 (1775), Kristiansand, Norway Mar 10, 2008 330 ml bottle. Dark brown body with a red shine and a dense beige head. Aroma is slightly roasted malt, coffee and dry fruit. Flavor is slightly roasted malt, coffee, prunes, some chocolate and a nice balanced bitterness. Well made and really enjoyable. 502Flavors (617), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Mar 9, 2008 Updated: Jun 16, 200812 ounce into a pint glass. A doppelbock done right is really delicious, and a not so good one is supremely unbearable (see my review of Paulaner Salvator). This poured pitch black (which surprised me when I looked at the picture of it shown on ratebeer, where it looks much lighter). It has a small, kind of strange tan/ weird off white head (I can;t really figure out what color it is, and it seems light for the darkness of the beer). The aroma is pungent, with traces of dark fruit, sweet malt, alcohol, molasses, coffee, and tobacco (reminded me of a sweeter stout). The flavor was not harsh, almost light, yet still very rich in flavor. This beer tasted how a dopplebock should taste, and was not unbearable sweet like some. The alcohol is mostly hidden underneath flavors of oak, sweet raisins and or prunes, and oats. It felt rich and smooth on my palate; it had a medium body with a heavy taste and light carbonation. MrStitch (138), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 8, 2008 Bottle. Pours a dark molasses brown with a thin light ten head that disappears quickly and leaves nice lacing around the glass. Aroma is warm and rich with the smell of dates, malt, and just the lightest hint of hops. The taste is very much the same filled with dark fruits and malts that falls off just as you think it might be a little to sweet of a beer into a nice dry finish. Mouthfeel is very nice, it’s thick but not syrupy, warm, and you get just the hint and tingle of alcohol with every sip. A very enjoyable beer that has made it into my list of beers to drink on the regular. crowderm (275), Recklinghausen, Germany Mar 8, 2008 Updated: Mar 11, 2008Pours a very dark black with a quickly vanishing tan head. Very attractive looking beer. The aroma is of prunes, yeast and some subtle herbal hops. The flavor is of dark roasted malts, dark dried fruit and a hint of herbal spice. The alcohol is very nicely balanced with the flavor of the beer. The mouthfeel is very smooth. Not my favorite German beer, but certainly a very, very good one. hillfiiiiire (283), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Mar 8, 2008 Pours pitch black with pretty much no head. The aroma is sweet almost like licorice. There’s some coffee maltiness with a slight kick of hop. The flavor is really quite well balanced. The hops offer just a right amount of bitterness with that licorice and coffee malt just working to balance. The palate and nice, thick, and full-bodied. lordeche (397), Quincy, Massachusetts, USA Mar 8, 2008 One of my go-to beers- pours molasses brown with light brown head that dissipates quickly. Aroma of dark fruit, nutty yeast, oats, roasted barley. Flavor is bready and yeasty with undertones of molasses, dark fruit, chocolate malt, some smoke, and barely perceptible hop finish. Moderately creamy palate with a slightly dry finish. mgermani (862), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Mar 7, 2008 Updated: Mar 30, 2008Pours a pitch black with a light brown head with poor retention. Delightful pungent aroma of molasses. Flavour is quite complex - fig, bready yeast, molasses, dark malt, mushroom, oats & a tinge of smokiness, light hop finish. Delicate carbonation, I wish this were creamier as it would compliment the flavours nicely, but it is rather thin. Overall, a great sipping beer. Complex, warming finish, a bit thin in body but lacking nothing for taste. Thanks to Degarth for the trade!
