Duhast500 (176), , Massachusetts, USA Aug 10, 2009 Poured from the bottle into a pint glass.
The color is a dark brown or black with a brown head.
The smell is of malt and butterscotch, and a bit of a molasis flavor.
The taste is of roasted malts, caramel, and molasis.
This beer is a bit on the heavy side but does not put to hard over the edge. It is very flavorful and perfect for the beer drinker thats into that smoked dark taste.
ChrisThomson (378), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 9, 2009 Bottle. Great beer to mark my 300th rating. Pours deep brown with tan head. Lovely aroma of sweet malt, raisins. Taste is sweet malt, more rasins, nutty and light smoke. Well balanced and very smooth. Love it. kuphish (150), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Aug 9, 2009 Bottle. Cola like pour. Large, foamy, brown head with a deep, ruby-brown body. Clear. Aroma of dark fruit - plum and dark cherry dominate. Chocolate and molasses also come through. Big, malty caramel and dark fruit flavor with a hint of some roast. Smooth palate - fairly soft carbonation, balanced body. Sweet, but with appropriate, balancing bitterness. Leaves a pleasant stickiness in the mouth followed by slight, warming alcohol. Overall this beer is not as big, outrageous and complex as I had anticipated, but I think it is the better for it. A great example of how a great beer doesn’t have to blow your face off with aroma and flavor. Sometimes subtleness works the best. Overall ultra smooth and very enjoyable. Bierkrug (235), Idar-Oberstein (in Pakistan), Germany Aug 7, 2009 330 ML bottle in USA, I had to come all the way to the US to try this but I understand not why it is the best rated Germany beer. A great one but it does not belong in the number one position. Great black brown color with a very deep dark brown head. Strong malt aroma that hides but is good. Very smooth. A great DoppleBock. cmonster (73), Portland, Oregon, USA Aug 6, 2009 Bottle served in a dimpled mug. Dense dark brown in color with 1/3 of the mug billowing with a beautiful tan froth, as depicted on the bottle art. Caramel malt, prunes, bread, and a slight woody aroma. Terrific nose. Decent carbonation followed closely by a roasty, creamy texture. Medium body. Long, roasty, oily finish. Rich, complex, and complete. There isn’t a better Doppel. Cole (266), , Alberta, Canada Aug 5, 2009 Pours deep brown with a tall light brown head. Looks fucking epic.Has a sweet malty aroma with notes of dark fruits and bread. Flavour is rich and malty with notes of bread, plumbs, very full flavoured. Excellent palate from bigging to end, hand down the best lager I have EVER had. Just plain wicked. buzzoven (333), Japan Aug 3, 2009 Great bottle design for this classic beer. Pours a rusty ruby red. Dark cherries, bourbon, slight smoke, licorice, bacon...wonderful flavour highlights. This beer is smooth, rounded and complex with a semisweet syrupy finish. One of the best.
