beernovice39 (237), South Carolina, USA Jul 12, 2009 Updated: Jul 14, 2009This was a rich and flavorfull beer. Fantastic taste, deep rich flavor! Every bit as great a beer as most here claim it to be! plovmand (1588), Helsinge, Denmark Jul 12, 2009 Rating #1200. Courtesy of Anker. Bottle. Poured dark brown with a long lasting tan head. The nose is heavy malty, bit roasty, lots of fruit, caramel, nuts and very complex. Flavour is bready malts with some rye, light roasted, caramel and sweet tobacco. Creamy texture. This is super quality. The best bock Ive ever had by far. FlyingTaco (112), Massachusetts, USA Jul 9, 2009 Original review date 2/9/2008...
Poured from bottle into pint glass. Pours like a Diet Coke - dark and carbontated with frothy pale head that dissipates quickly. Looks like powerful syrupy stiff.
German chocolate aroma - a little soft, a sour, sorta metal. After about 15 minutes it reveals a toasted nut texture - almost like pecan pie. Strong, smoked malt taste - a little too puckering at first but develops slowly. Still slightly sour. Alcohol and malt are there in force - could be a little better blended but still well-balanced. Short-to-medium finish. Carbonation is long gone a few minutes after pour - first sip is a little clammy; a few minutes later it’s very soothing. This needs a little while to breathe, sort of like wine. Most likely best enjoyed in a dark, warm setting - bar, ski lodge, German brew haus, etc. - powerful, well-made stuff.
JesseM (660), Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada Jul 8, 2009 330mL bottle courtesy of matt7215 for my 600th rating! Thanks Matt! This gem pours a dark brownish amber with a small tan head. Perfect aroma of Munich, Caramalts, chrystal malts, toffee, bready-biscuity caramel, and awesomeness (which is a real smell you know). Flavour is just delicious, so complex, yet so drinkable. Sweet malty complexities upfront are balanced by a dry bite in the finish, subtle hop aspects and some smoke. Biscuity as I would expect, something I love about dark lagers. Mouth-feel is amazing, velvety smooth, it just slides right down and I have to restrain myself from drinking it all in a minute. Balance is perfect, it actually gets better with every sip. This is the ideal Dopplebock. I need an ornate fountain of this flowing 24/7 in my room. Let it warm a bit so it can really reveal itself to you! Thanks again Matt! bblack99 (195), Kansas City, Missouri, USA Jul 8, 2009 Pours a dark brown with reddish tint capped by a short-lived cream-colored creamy head.
Aroma is a sweet mix of molasses, figs, and dates. Taste is incredible for a simple German bock, with caramel sweetness, smooth and rich malts, and an appearance of the figs from the nose.
Rich and roasty mouthfeel with very little carbonation. Best doppelbock ever? Sure, why not? Madsnp (607), Odense C, Denmark Jul 8, 2009 Bottle. Exp. march 2007. Pours a dark brown brew with a fine beige head. Aromas of raisins, sweet malt, coffee with milk, nuts and chocolate. Chewy toffee flavour with notes of chocolate, malt and a little licorice. Super rich flavour. General66 (164), Streator, Illinois, USA Jul 4, 2009 12 ounce bottle enjoyed on a rainy Fourth of July Day. Pours a cola-like brown color with a one and a half finger width tan head that disappears quickly. It has some mahogany tints around the edges of the glass also. The aroma is a bit bland for my liking. It consists of subtle malts, some very faint cocoa, and a somewhat strange copper hint. The taste is what separates this bock from the rest though. It has a good taste of roasted and sweet malts and a slight hint of cocoa. It has a light mouth feel and leaves a nice bitter taste in your mouth after each drink. I will go on record here and say that this is the best doppelbock that I have had so far. I am still not a huge fan of the style though because it’s lack of complexity. zepfoowez (3), , Virginia, USA does not count Jul 1, 2009 appearance is similar to coke. flavor mild for alcohol content. finish is very clean and sweet-- quite pleasant. a good beer, nothing spectacular
