Deep black with a nice foam head rising nearly an inch above my glass (hell yeah!). Aroma of sweet malt, melon, cherries, honey, maybe even some soft cheese. Drinking this beer is like drinking a chocolate malt milkshake. Palate is perfect, never once seeming too thin or too thick. Leaves no nasty aftertaste, no offensive tastes whatsoever (as I’ve found almost every single beer does to some degree). Flavor is robustly malty though never overbearing, and hops are perfectly balanced without even leaving a pinch of bitterness. A+ Jeppe (2638), Ølbutikken, Denmark

I was really looking forward to tasting it to see if it really is that good...!? Wow, this is a real beauty! Almost black/deep amber beer with a reddish glow. On top a tall and creamy tan head. Nose is quite powerful; chocolate, malt, nut, toffee, spices - very spicy and aromatic. Flavor is full and spicy. A lot of roasted malt, hops, chocolate, rye bread and nut. Very smooth and complex and quite remarkable! downender (2633), Bristol, Gloucestershire, England
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 9, 2009 Bottle from Corks, Bristol. Dark chestnut in colour with a short-lived tan head. Aroma of prunes, caramel, molasses and doughy malts. Flavour had some fruit and chocolate to start, before roasted notes, leafy hops and a moderately sweet finish. A complex and enjoyable beer. maniac (2628), Richmond, Virginia, USA

No idea how old this bottle was but it held up very well. Very dark brown pour, with a decent sized tan head. One of the best aroma’s I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing, just a huge combo of various malts that produce a gorgeous sweet scent. The mouthfeel was actually thinner than I expected with a nice refreshing crispness to it, which balanced off the many chocolate, caramel, and roasted flavours, along with a decent amount of bitterness. I found it finished very dry. This was a wonderful experience; I wonder if you can do any better in this style.
Re-rate - I’ll knock it down a few notches from its original 4.4 lofty perch, as I had a much bigger sample shared with Hogtown Harry, GregClow, and Blankboy, and a fresher bottle (courtesy of Harry) and it didn’t do as much for me. The aroma was still good but didn’t blow me away, and I enjoyed it, just didn’t find it nearly as complex as before. Still a world class beer. ChainGangGuy (2608), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA

Appearance: Clear, dark brownish-red body with a thin, very thin, white head.
Smell: Sweet-smelling, raisin-packed aroma full of heavy caramel overtones. Slighter hints of fresh grain and unsweetened chocolate.
Taste: Sweet, caramel-covered grains followed by tons of raisin fruitiness. Minor chocolate hint. A few gingerbread crumbs. Light spicy hops and bitterness. More alcohol than you’d expect from 6.7% creeps into the semi-sweet, fruity finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-plus carbonation. Sticky mouthfeel.
Drinkability: Ayinger’s Celebrator Doppelbock, while we’ve had some wonderful times together, isn’t exactly my favorite d-bock out there. I feel this way no matter how many little plastic goats it gives me. Pailhead (2605), Allen Park, Michigan, USA
