| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Sep 23, 2006 Bottle. Sultry, decadent aroma ... grape, red fruit, and massive loads of malt. Vinous, sweet, molasses, prunes (and suprisingly strong!), earthy notes, brown sugar, and very light alcohol. Very dark red pour (to dark brown) with an ephemeral light brown head. Rich and seductive taste, vinous and surprisingly dry, light smoke and heavy roasted malt under the heavy fruitiness. Surprisingly dry. Caramel and dark chocolate also jump to the fore .. lots of flavor here. An explosion of flavor, really, in all parts of the mouth and throat. Toffee continues even through the aftertaste. Full body, thick and chewy, dry earthy finish. One of the most pleasant aftertastes around. Slightly sticky lips, but they’re dry. Much drier, earthier, chewier than the Andechser, as well as slighly hoppier...choice between the two would be based on whim. whaleman (2171), North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA

It used to leave me feeling "underwhelmed". The flavors are subtle and tend to come together very late... near the last sip. Strong cola elements have also interfered with my ability to completely fall in love with this beer. However, after repeated samples and finally finding the temperature that works best with it, I'm growing increasingly fond of this complex but subtle and delicate brew.

Chocolate malt mix (think Ovaltine and similar products) on the nose with a faint touch of caramel. Smooth body with a thick caramel flavor that eventually yields to a light Ovaltine flavor. johndoughty (2170), cheslyn hay, West Midlands, England
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 26, 2007 Dark and quite malty. Medium head on pouring that soon disipated. Slightly sweet but not overpoweringly so. From other raters reviews I expected slightly better but nevertheless this was definitely above average. GonZoBeeR (2163), ste-Eulalie, Quebec, Canada

| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 1, 2003 Had to drop the $ when I found this one today. I am impressed. This one pours with a light tan head and an appealing aroma of bread and raisins. The body is consistent and thick, with toffee, bread, and raisin flavors dominating the palate. Very sweet aftertaste finishes with a touch of bitterness. Rich, complex, and every bit worthy of its impressive ratebeer score.

Aroma is very fruitcakish with lots of sweet malt and spice. Dark brown with a creamy two finger thick tan head. Flavor is deep and rich with more of the fruitcake notes and touches of almost burnt bread. Some mashed dark fruit and a flavor apporximating a puree of raisins, figs and brown sugar.

The Great King of Dopplebocks. This beer alone makes up for most of the skunky green beers that come from Germany.
