On the nose it has a light citrusy oak smell. Tastes like wheaty, yeast with subtle hints of roasted malts, almost smoky. Immy (1912), Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA

Pours a deep, dark reddish brown with a fat light brown head.Nose is roasty, chocolatey malt. Flavors are rather complex - light roasted coffee, chocolate, malt - and they all blend together into a beautiful amalgam that can overwhelm the palate, leaving you craving for more. On top of all those beautiful flavors is a light, creamy mouthfeel that perfectly complements the flavors. Simply lovely! Joeh (1908), Buckinghamshire, England

Sweet chocolate aroma & some meatyness. Loads of chocolate and sweet malt, coco remains on the tongue and at the back of the throat. Not up to the Andechser or the Weltenburger. frankenkitty (1903), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA

Pours a deep, burgundy/mahogany with a tan head that fades to a thick film. Gorgeous malt aromas enveloped me in chocolate, caramel and dark fruits with a dash of smoke and stale Bazooka bubblegum for good measure. Although tasty, the flavor did not strike me with the same grand impression. Coffee bitters and earthen notes with pruney middle-sweetness led to an alcoholic astringency and lingering bitters. Able-bodied with a whisky consistency.
A fine beer, but a thicker body and additional sweetness would have been preferable (it’s possible I simply crave a Barleywine). Regardless, it was easy to get lost in the indulgent aroma, celebrate my 600th rating, and forget about all else.

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Mar 28, 2004 Bice big tan head, pretty well lasting. Vanilla, Caramel, slight coffee notes. Nice hoppy bite to it, then sweetness takes over, almost with a cocoa/coffee flavor. Nice malty flavor further into the beer, and the cocoa seems to fade. A very nice brew. marcus (1902), Sacramento, California, USA
| 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Aug 16, 2004 This is a dark brown beer that pours with a short but attractive light brown head. There is a very rich chocolatey flavor, with a dry chocolate aftertaste. This outstanding example of the doppelbock style makes an appropriate reward for any occasion calling for a celebration. jeffc666 (1895), Fairfax, Virginia, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Oct 18, 2003 Updated: Dec 3, 2004Re-rate 8/31/04 Deep dark brown-ruby body topped by a huge creamy light tan head. Glass lacing is quite nice. The aroma is a very pleasant pure, crisp malt. Caramel and grain. Beautiful aroma. The flavor is not quite as good as teh aroma but is still outstanding. Chewy, almost buttery maltiness. Full thick lovely body. This beer is defintely worthy of all of the praise heaped upon it. Old Rating -10/18/2003- 9/3/7/3/16 Clear brown, can’t quite see through it. Nice quickly diminishing tan head comprised of fine particles. The aroma is exactly that of stepping into an active brewery. Boiling wort, yum. The flavor is exactly like the aroma. Nutty malt and sweet dark fruit flavors. Some smokey flavors. Bitterness seems to all come from the grain. Body is medium with a grainy aftertaste.
