Commercial Description:
Ayinger Oktober Fest Märzen has a deep golden color tinted with amber. It is lightly sweet with a malty nose balanced with floral hops. Its medium to big body and alcohol is not overpowering. The soft dryness comes from long maturation.

Bottle. Pours slightly hazy orange/amber with a rich frothy head. Roasted malt and caramel sweetness on the nose. Dry roasted malt and dough-like dryness on the palate. Yeasty dryness dominates over the malt. Slightly watery and not as rich on the palate as the nose would lead me to believe. Decent, though. Finishes carbonated and fairly dry.

Big malt aroma with some spicy hop notes, dry pumpkin, pale fruits and pie crust. The body is a murky brown/orange and holds a diminishing tan head that starts a thumb thick. Sweet malt fore has a little butterscotch candy, sweetbreads, honey brushed dough and buttery sweet potatoes. Very nice and easy drinking.

500ml bottle. Pours a very dark amber body with a huge, fluffy light tan head. German beer never fails to impress in the appearance department. It just looks like a beer should. On the nose I get spicy hops, sweet malt notes, biscuit dough, grapefruit, lemon zest and floral notes. Fore is lightly astringent, with the hops and bready notes dominating. Back of the tongue brings more malt sweetness into play, as well as the citrus hints. Palate is creamy and medium bodied. Finish is sweet bread dough and hops, medium length and refreshing. Great beer.

Appearance: Served in an Ayinger glass, this beer pours a deep golden body with a frothy, off-white head. Very active bubbles. Smell: Light bready, toffee-scented aroma. Maybe some apples, too. Taste: Whoa, well, the malts are fairly played down flavor-wise. What remains is a restrained doughy flavor with a floral hoppiness. Noticeably more musty than other Oktoberfests. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Low carbonation - nearly flat. Slight alcohol warming comes through in the finish. Drinkability: Not nearly as moving or stirring as some other Oktoberfests available.

Orangish in appearance, the subtle malting becomes more apparent in aroma and flavor as the beer warms. A bit light-bodied, however, the low roasted malts are pleasant, yet undemanding on the palate.

Rated 9/8/06: This is a great standard for an Oktoberfest. It took a little while for the aroma to open up but once the beer warmed a bit It was rewarding. Malty with a nice sweetness, good to the nose. Pour was standard, medium copper with a nice white head and medium lacing. Very creamy on the palate smooth and clean, unbelievably pleasant mouthfeel. Flavor like the aroma takes a short while to warm up and release all of it’s potential. Slightly aggressive and nicely sweet, there is a good bread quality present. Tops on the list for Marzens that I have encountered so far.
