Commercial Description:
Our Ayinger Ur-Weisse is an old-fashioned wheat with some fine roasted malt to give it more color and flavor than golden hefe- weisse. It has an immense crown of lovely foam held proudly above a robe of translucent amber. On the palate, malt and yeast predominate, with a delicious balance of fruit and bread-like yeast. The taste is complex, with suggestions of soft fruit, apple, and, in the finish, perhaps, even cloves.

Amazing rocky meringue-like head on this dark amber, hazy colored dunkelweizen. Extraordinarily aromatic too with traditional banana-clove, together with some soft caramel-toffee notes. Fresh bread & yeast is apparent also. Palate is smooth, creamy texture with sufficient carbonation, a soft malt component, and gently spiced in there as well.

Bottle. Pours with a large, creamy barely off-white head with a hazed brown body. Good lace and retention. Aroma is full of banana esters, clove phenols with the yeast, a bit of chocolate, caramel and dark fruits. Taste is watery with chocolate, caramel and clove. Lively to fizzy mouthfeel.

Bottle as shown. Pours a hazy copper golden with a large frothy white head that diminshes quickly. A lot of carbonation and good sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is banana wheat and yeast. Easy to drink with a fruity taste with banana and light clove. A good dunkel from Ayinger.

Location: 500 ml bottle from Gilly’s, 4/6/09

Aroma: Bread-like yeast, fruit - banana, some citrus
Appearance: Very hazy dark gold color, frothy white head
Flavor: Lots of yeasty bread malts, spice, cloves
Palate: Nice mouthfeel, this one is very complex for a wheat
Overall Impression: A really nice wheat beer. The complexity and richness are really nice for the style. Its an excellent example of a style, and a quality warm weather beer.

Bottled. Pours really hazy and brownishly orange with a beautiful, thick head. Nice aroma is yeasty, wheaty, fruity (mainly banana) and slightly spicy. When cold this is really carbonated and therefore appears to be quite acidic, but as it warms up the beer gets softer and turns very sweet. Flavor is aromatic, fruity (banana), yeasty and wheaty. This was the first, though probably not the last wheat beer that I liked.
