Commercial Description:
Our Ayinger Ur-Weisse is an old-fashioned wheat with some fine roasted malt to give it more color and flavor than golden hefe- weisse. It has an immense crown of lovely foam held proudly above a robe of translucent amber. On the palate, malt and yeast predominate, with a delicious balance of fruit and bread-like yeast. The taste is complex, with suggestions of soft fruit, apple, and, in the finish, perhaps, even cloves.

500 ml bottle from Country Club Liquors. Nose of pumpernickel bread, light caramel, light cloves, and a little light fruit. hazy amber with a big beige head. Flavor is caramel, banana, some pepperiness, and cloves. Pretty nice!

Bottle from santa - hazy orange with substantial head - bright, citrus and clove aroma, with equal parts wheat - soft carbonation, and some light fruity esters of apple and pear, reminding me more of a light belgian - the strong wheat flavor reminds you what kind of beer you’re drinking, though - light earthy, yeasty notes - clove and orange jam arrive late - a bit thin in the finish, but otherwise quite nice and refreshing.

50 cl bottle. Yeast at the bottom. Muddy dark colour with a nice creamy head. Lovely soft aroma of bread-like, banana and yeast nearly like candy. Great soft flavour too of yeast, wheat and banana taste. Very refreshing and tasty.

(500 ml bottle: $2.59 at Hollingshead Deli in Orange, CA) Second attempt with this beer, so hopefully it’s fresher and more enjoyable. This beer pours a translucent, glowing, golden-amber color, but the fizzy, off-white head dissipates rapidly, leaving just a small ring as proof of its existence. Quite a lot of sweet banana, spice and wheat in the nose. Wheat malts are the most prevalent in the flavor, with banana, apples and cloves showing less presence. I thought a previous bottle of this was off because of the light apple, but maybe that’s just the way it is. Fairly sweet in general, and the wheat shows a touch of breadiness, and as the temperature of beer increases, so too does the breadiness, but enough to cause me any distress. Medium-full bodied and well-carbonated, but tiring out the palate as the beer warms up. Definitely one of the better imported Dunkelweizens I’ve had the opportunity to try, but Ayinger usually is near the top of the heap with most everything I try of theirs.

Pours a murky brownish with orange hue. Nice fluffy head which dies down. Has a roasty, sweet malt scent with yeast. Flavor is crisp suggestions of citrus and yeast as well as a pleasant roastiness. The roasted grains excentuate the flavor of the weizen beer, yet it is still incredibly drinkable. Tingles the palate.

Clear amber color, the head beige, large, frothy, lace in sheets to coat the glass. Nose?, malt, yeast, earthy and aromatic, front? sweet, top?, medium, finish? dry, lightly acidic, touch of hops, moderate to light carbonation, all in all a very drinkable beer.

This is an interesting brew. It distinctly smells like fried plantain -- banana and char smoke. Hazy, muddy beer with some green tones. Very cool cap redeems the appearance rating. Sweet, a bit smoky, like watery brown sugar light body, residual sweetness. Can't taste the alcohol. Some phenols in the finish. I fear that I could drink a lot of this in short order. Has gentle homebrew qualities.

Delicious, peppery and spicy aroma, complemented by cloves, a little orange and lemon. Pours with a nice large head, and a deep auburn color. Taste is very peppery, lively, yeast and lemon, wheat. Full palate, very nice.
