There’s a weird, quick forming, quickly leavin’ head on this thing. No sediment. I just about had to pour this thing down my nose until I could smell anything, and at that point all I got was a distant waft of sour chocolate. Tastes like...uh...not a lot? Sugar? Caramel? Really watery coffee that’s been left on the burner for way too long? Yeah, that’s the one! I’m really just guessing because it’s all so mild and so buried in a lack of balance that I can’t tell what they’re going for. How can you be both unbalanced and watered down? Congrats on pulling off a difficult trick, you beach bums. I’ll keep buying your beers that look cool in the bottle, just not thing mess again. ChainGangGuy (2568), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA
| 1.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 5/20 | Feb 17, 2008 Appearance: Pours a clear, dark brownish-red body with a small, frothed, light beige head.
Smell: Ugh, it’s alot like a mild, dark lambic, if there were such a thing. Azalea Coast... what have you wrought?
Taste: A displeasingly tart, bordering on vinegar fruitiness really works hard to derail the chocolate malts and hint of cocoa. Each sips lives you with more of the caustic acetic taste and less of the chocolate. Leaves you with a chalky, tart aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Mild carbonation.
Drinkability: Never trust a pirate! CaptainCougar (5459), Rockville, Maryland, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Feb 15, 2008 Pours a barely transparent dark mahogany with a thin ring of wispy light tan head. Aroma of lightly sweet dark chocolate and some tart light fruity notes. Body starts somewhat thin for the style with decent dark chocolate flavor, but an unexpected and likely infected tartness before a drier, slightly earthy roasty and tart finish. Would be pretty good without the tartness. nearbeer (1834), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA

Cocoa-biscuit aroma. Sour cherry, acetic acid and cocoa flavor; almost tastes like a lambic with cocoa powder stirred in. Nearly medium-bodied, acetic-astringent, and dry. Interesting, but I think this one was infected. aubreya (676), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA

| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Oct 3, 2007 Sampled at Brewgrass 2007. Brown in color with a thin dark tan head. Light roast aroma, very malty spice. Very light on the palate. Mild roast throughout the taste, some cocoa bitterness in the end. Way too light for a stout in color and mouthfeel.
Note: I sampled from a bomber after I tasted the tap version, and there was something seriously wrong about the bottle. Tasted like malt vinegar. kp (8399), Woodstock, Georgia, USA
