Near black colored with red hints, medium sized beige head. Rich coffee roasted aroma with sweet caramel. Thin to medium bodied. Flavor is also strongly roasted with same coffee dominating, sweet flavor with some dryness in aftertaste. Good mild ale with stoutish notes.

Gravity at Cambridge Beer Festival 2009. Almost black with a slight scum on the top. Hint of smoke in the nose. Quite thin. Rather sweet and watery. Lots of straw in the mouth, a hint of berries and a nasty metallic-sulphuric end, which spoilt it.

Cask-conditioned at the Knights Templar (JDW), Bristol 16/05/09. Near black in colour with a decent, off-white head. Slightly sweet aroma with some roastiness. Flavour began with some caramel, before some chocolate, more roastiness and a slightly smoky finish. Good stuff.

A Sim rate (Manchester BF): Smoke and roast in the flavour. It’s a mild, but almost porter-esque. Almost opaque. I had to literally find the light within it. Sweet, but vinegary. It’s wine-like. OK, but a mild afterall.

From cask at Guildford Arms. Pours dark brown to almost black with a diminished tan head. Roasted malt aroma with a mild liqourice spice note. Light acidic flavoured out of a solid roasted malt breadish flavour with a hint of chocolate. Light acidic and roasted malty finish.

Cask, Newcastle Arms, Newcastle Upon Tyne. Deep dark brown, next to no head. Roasty toasty, bready, coffee aroma and flavour. Yep, a good un’

Cask conditioned at The Turf Tavern, Oxford. Black with cream head. Big, oatmealy beer almost a stout in flavour, burnt, dry coffee notes, qhite husky with touches of malty sweetness, biscuity and thick on the palate. Decent.

Cask at Merton Winter Beer Festival, 2005 Going back through my travel log and Merton Beer Festival information tonight and picking up those I’ve not added yet. This is a really decent Mild that I’ve had many times since. Poured dark brown with a beige head, simple mild but nice coffee and chocolate aroma to this. Lovely roasted mlt taste and whilst uncomplicated very well done.
