Aroma of tropical fruit (pineapple) and oily resin. Good tropical fruit taste with a fair amount of caramel balance. I’m surprised this isn’t rated higher. Maybe they’ve tinkered with the recipe since 2005. JohnC (2285), Mission Viejo, California, USA

It pours a hazy amber with a very thin head. The aroma is oily/hoppy with pine & citrus notes. The flavor is palate-scrapping hoppy. Ty5592 (1015), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA

Malty citrus hop aroma. The taste was the same with light caramel notes. Thicker body. Pretty good. Cornfield (4963), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 18, 2007 This pours a slightly hazed dark amber body with a creamy beige head that coats the glass in sheets. At the base of the aroma are rich malts and caramel. The hop bitterness is a bit of a mishmash, pine, grapefruit and herbs clashing together to create a sharp earthy scent. They become more clearly defined in the taste, each bitter flavor blending in more friendly fashion with the others. The strong malt backbone works hard to support the onslaught of the hops, but they win out in the end producing a prolonged bitter finish. Sounds nice, too. A good DIPA.

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 2, 2005 I do believe it was BBB63 who introduced me to this at the DL Release after-party. Slightly hazy orange golden. Nose is quite nice--hoppy with a good dose of apricott. Slightly dry and nicely bitter. This is a very nice IPA but it really bothers me that it’s called Hop Monster and it just isn’t... well, maybe in LaPorte but that just doesn’t fly around these parts. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 2, 2005 Growler fresh for tap that morning, opened at DL post-release gathering: Golden hue with a firm head and excellent lace. The aroma has a piney and grassy hops note with some toasty malts and grapefruit esters. The taste has a sharp hoppy forefront with a bready malt backdrop. Additional undertones of citrus and minerals. The feel is average, biting. Pretty good beer Chuck, stepping up. I enjoyed it and hoped others did as well. ElJefe (553), Rochester, New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 15, 2005 Sampled from the growler BBB63 brought to the DL release party back in April. Golden-orange colored with a thin white head. Aroma is very citrusy - mandarin oranges, grapefruit and some spruce. Smoothly carbonated, could use a bit more body, seeing as it an IIPA. I thought this was quite nice
