Cletus (5002), Connecticut, USA Oct 14, 2009 Pours dark amber with a trace of white bubbles floating on the top of the glass. Smells of caramel, maple, some dark fruit. Tastes fruity and sweet with some cherry like hints on the finish. Enjoyable. jsquire (2087), St. Marys, Ohio, USA Sep 13, 2008 Deep reddish amber color with almost no head. Rich caramel nose with too much alcohol. Lots of caramel, bready malts, ripe fruit, raisen bread, and a lot of alcohol in the flavor. This is a big abv BW, but may be a little old for my tastes. Thanks to BBB63 for the bottle. beerbill (1919), Laurel, New York, USA Apr 27, 2008 12 oz. bottle courtesy of a trade with BBB63. Pours a slightly hazy but brilliant coppery orange with a moderate yellow/white head that faded to a ring after about a third of a glass and left a light layer if lace after each sip. Pleasant aroma of caramel and some fruity hops. The flavor, however, does not deliver on the promise of the aroma. While there is some sweet caramel up front, the follow-up is light citrus, pine, and black pepper and just does not seem to come together in any cohesive way. The mouthfeel is weird; sweet and a bit sticky from the malt, yet thin and almost acrid at the same time. Definitely not what I look for in a barley wine. Ughsmash (3981), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Apr 10, 2008 Thanks to Mike for the bottle! Poured brilliant peachy-golden with a short cap of beige head.. settled to a dusting rather quickly. The aroma picked up plums and caramel upfront with a rich layer of earth and some peppery spice.. more sweet fruits emerge with warmth.. nice presentation. The flavor was centered around syrupy sweeter fruits with light earthy bitterness and mild citrus around.. grainy back-end with a bit too much alcohol heat.. sticky, sweet finish. Heavier-bodied and syrupy on the palate.. warm and grainy, especially on the back.. decent brew. kp (8400), Woodstock, Georgia, USA Mar 9, 2008 Date: 02/23/2008
