A bit too much alcohol.. not enough malt to balance it.
Plan on aging the rest of the 6 pack. Slick (1962), Thief River Falls, Minnesota, USA

Nice dark brown with some reds and yellows, bottle conditioned. Flavor begins with a big medium dry malt flavor, caramel and light alcohol. Some dark fruits in the background. Man, if you think this thing is bitter, you’re in for a shock when you try bigfoot. Anways, I thought it was quite well-balanced, maybe a touch too much alcohol apparency. This would definitely benefit from aging. (I was too impatient though). Needs to develop some personality. As it is now, it is well-made and tasty but quite unmemorable. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 17, 2004 Strong prune and caramel aroma with bitter piney hops. Body is a very cloudy orange-red with a thin ring of light tan carbonation and light film on the surface. Flavor starts with that sweet, bready caramel goodness barleywines often share, but strongly bitter grapefruit citrus and alcohol do take over the palate quickly, and discerning malt complexity becomes more difficult when this happens. argo0 makes a good point about the English-American hybrid status of this brew. Despite the flaws, I find myself enjoying this chewy, interesting barleywine. Mmmm...now I'm tasting sweet fruits. Thanks for the treat Mike (BBB63)! CaptainCougar (5530), Rockville, Maryland, USA

Good complexity in the sweet malty body, and well balanced with a good amount of floral bittering hops. A very enjoyable barleywine. Thank you BBB63! BBB63 (4271), La Porte, Indiana, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 14, 2003 Hazy copper hue with very good off-white creamy head and very good lacing. The aroma is grapefruit, caramel candy sweet, musty yeast, and some pine. The taste has some sweet notes upfront but quickly in subdued by a grapefruit twang and bitter aftertaste. The alcohol is noticeable but not dominate. The mouthfeel is smooth and chewy, but still is missing something that aging may help. The solid and drinkable beer considering the style. ¾ (5008), Boulder, Colorado, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Dec 10, 2003 Medium dark amber and very cloudy. Opaque, but with close to no head. The smell is musty caramel malts, full of old clothes and bad cough medicine. There is a nagging flavor of grass in this one. Strong and tasting of dark fruit, with not much alcohol evident. Finish is hopped and of sweet fruit. Thanks bigbadbear! egajdzis (3640), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA

Malty caramel, dark fruit, and alcohol in the aroma. Malty, fruity, maybe alittle chocolate? with an alcohol and hop finish.
