Commercial Description:
The Back Road Autumn Ale (aka Pecker Head Red for the tap version) went through a major recipe change in the fall of 2004. It was brewed as a Imperial American Pale Ale and was bottled in 22 oz bottle and a brown label (not orange).

Sampled at the March 25th Tosa Gathering, courtesy of BBB63: Pours a clear copper orange with a nince, whispy-lacing off-white head. Hoppy, sugary, candy-like aroma with a mild caramel malty presence. Starts semi-sweet and bitter with some earthy hops and a touch of toffee. Nicely hopped and fairly well-balanced IPA, but not imperial enough for me.

Hmm, who other than Mike could provid this. Clear amby body with orange highlights. Caramel malt aroma. The same caramel malt in the flavor but it’s accompanied by sharp citrus hops and a lesser resinous pine. Simple flavors but the work very well together and they taste fresh.

March Tosa tasting ala BBB63. Hazy copper color with a small but stable off white head. Very herbal and "weedy" aromas, with golden rod and other pollens filling the air space. Hints of caramel malt in the far reaches. Light zippy feel. Light sweet start with a hops component that shows up mid gulp and really takes over. A long and lasting caffeine type bitterness. Some nuttiness does seem to come in, but there again there’s the bitterness, like that of a pecan shell. A touch more malt sweetness to offset the bitterness and this would be more in the lines of an english IIPA.

Rusty orange color. Light thin dusty/soapy head. Sweet orange soda hops aroma... Taste is kind of a sweet and citrusy hop liquor. Though, it isn’t too sweet.. it is nicely balanced and has a great hop tone to it.

Pours a hazy amber color, small white head. Some small chunks appears to be floating around in it chillin out. Aroma is hoppy, oranges, lemons and grapefruit. Flavor is sweet, with a hoppy kick, spicy flavors as well. Interesting stuff. Thanks to BBB63 for sharing this one.

Smells of spicy grapefruit and floral hops. Appears to be a hazy orange with some matter floating around in it. Tastes is sweet, with pine accents and caramel malts. An IPA at best - I think classification as an I2PA is a bit of a stretch. Thanks to BBB63 for this one!

Careful. Make sure you’re rating what you think you are. This was provided by BBB63 but the bottle didn’t say pecker head red. I rated the correct item (he told us what to rate). Aroma: weak, light hoppiness. Appearance: Copper, thin head, small particles, light bubbly. Flavor: Hoppy, grassy, nutty, caramel. Palate: bitter. Overall: I’m not a big fan of this one.

I agree with others here, this really isn’t a marzen at all. Definitely and amber ale of sorts. Pours a crystal clear brownish amber, decent heads with thick patches of lace. Nose is mild and malty. Flavor is a bit more assertive with a good dose of the old hops here and there and notes of toffee and roasted marshmallow. Entirely quaffable and refreshing with a briskly carbonated mouthfeel. It definitely seems more suited to summer time than autumn. Certainly no complaints from me.
