CaptainCougar (5379), Rockville, Maryland, USA Apr 16, 2007 On tap at the 10th Annual San Diego Strong Ale Festival: Pours a deep mahogany ruby with a frothy, pillowy tan head. Sweet, sticky caramel malty toffee aroma has some light fruity notes. Body starts full and sweet with some caramel and brown sugar complexity toward a warming, bittersweet earthy finish. Could use more balance. beeryum (652), Norcross, Georgia, USA Feb 17, 2006 Draft at PP Strong Ale Fest ’05. Kinda dark copper pour. Fruity old-ale aroma. Malty flavors, some sweet caramel, fairly fruity still, and maybe a little musty. goldtwins (4079), Nesconset, New York, USA Dec 19, 2005 9th Annual San Diego Strong Ale Fest: Slightly amber with no head. Sweet fruity malt. Apricots. Big on the fruit. Malty flavors. Brown sugar and toffee. Light hop background. Creamy and full. Nice mouthfeel. chilehead (186), Laguna Niguel, California, USA Aug 22, 2005 I also had it at pizza port in san clemente. Nutty and sweet, tastes a bit like cider and caramel. Full bodied, light carbonation, no head. papajohn (1054), San Diego (Mira Mesa), California, USA Aug 7, 2005 Sampled@Pizza Port San Clemente: Bourbon color with a wisp of tan head. Nose is sweet and malty with a little alcohol. Flavor is rich with some oak, a hint of whiskey and a light dry spicy finish. Smooth creamy palate. it’s a dirty brown color, dry flavor, but doesn’t have anything notworthy DarkElf (2681), La Jolla, California, USA Jan 20, 2005 (Draft: Pizza Port in San Clemente, CA) Boy, I don’t know, this old ale tastes pretty close to a mediocre Belgian Strong Ale to me. Spicy, moderately sweet, wheaty, slightly sour, and the alcohol is readily apparent. The nose is malty and earthy, but I’m also getting the mild, yet unmistakeable smell of vinegar throughout this tasting session, though it’s not strong enough to ruin the overall nose. Medium in bodiy with a slightly sticky mouthfeel. Murky, ruddy brown color. Small light tan head fades away to nothing. Kind of an odd beer, and I’m not all that impressed. It is the $2 special at Pizza Port tonight, so maybe it’s the same keg as they had at the Strong Ale Festival last month and they are trying to get rid of it.
