This is a very interesting beer, and the closest to a kvass I’ve yet had. Aroma is light malted chocolate, lactic sweetness and a touch of roast. A bit of pumpernickel in the flavor complements some of the lactic component. Not really noticing any rye, but it is indeed bready. A solid beer, for sure. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 20, 2007 Pours midnight brown w/ a shallow, semi creamy froth that dissapears quickly. Aromas of roasted cocoa fill the air. Very nice! Medium nectar w/ residual effers that create a hard-water texture. Big roasty flavors w/ plenty of cocoa. Slight bagelesque nuance is quickly forgotten amidst this robust foreground. The finish is bittered perfectly. Not so dry and very enjoyable. detroiter (958), Euphoria, Minnesota, USA

Pours a deep dark black, topped by half an inch of creamy tan foam. Excellent head retention. Thick lacing. Sweet bread and chocolate malt in the aroma.
Bittersweet chocolate malt, a little burned coffee, dark roasted grain. A unique earthy dryness in the finish - rye perhaps? Tangy hops in the finish. Velvety smooth mouthfeel, creamy carbonation.
One delightful beer. DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 21, 2006 Thanks to Matta for this one. Pours ebony with 2-finger tan head and great lacing. Aroma of roasty chocolate malt, coffee, some pumperkickly notes, and some vinous molasses. The flavor was roasty malty, getting very chocolatey as it warmed, with a bit of krieky tartness and dry hops, and indeed some pumpernickly, rye, caraway seedy notes in the finish. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 6, 2006 22oz bomber via trade with Degarth! - Thanks Joe! - Pours almost black with a thick creamy tan head that stays pretty well. Aromas of roasted malts, light chocolate and a touch of coffee. Flavor is light chocolate and roasted malt with some raisin flavor sneaking in. Definitely a touch of coffee as well. Medium bodied and pretty smooth on the palate. Definitely drinkable with a somewhat dry finish. Papsoe (14996), Frederiksberg, Denmark
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 4, 2006 (Bottle 65 cl) Pours black and almost completely opaque with a small, beige head. Medium body with lots of lightly burned malt and some roasted, coffeeish notes. Lightly vinous with accents of raisins. Coffeeish, slightly ashy finish. But not bad at all. Thanks to Degarth for sharing this. 030406 GG (1640), NorCal, California, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Feb 7, 2006 While I admit that the brewer was doing something different, which I always will admire, this one just didn’t do it for me. A pitch black pour with minimal head, the nose just didn’t have much punch for a porter. Slight hints of roastiness but that’s about it. Mouthfeel was thin, flavor was roastiness and some bitterness. I didn’t taste anything that was remotely pumpernickel nor bagels so that was pretty poor. An average beer. Nothing more. redlight (1475), Winter Park, Florida, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 17, 2005 Coffee, vanilla, a little spiciness. Pours black with fluffy tan head. Tastes smooth, vanilla, coffee, chocolate, a little cinamon. Wish I could taste pumpernickel bagel but its still a good porter.
