Just getting around to popping it. This is a damn fine porter. Pours a rich and creamy brownish color with a deep purple hue. So dark that light does not penetrate it. Light head, with lots of moving bubbles. Aroma is nice, chocolate and rye bread. Flavor has both chocolate and rye, but much more: hints of toast, raisins, roasted malt, and even milk. Great balance on everything. Palate is exceptional, very rich and creamy. This beer is vastly underrated, and one of the best porter I have drank. Ibrew2or3 (2833), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 4, 2007 This beer pours deep dark brown with lasting tan foam ring. The aroma is roasty and toasty with sweet dark fruity esters of prunes, dates and mild raisins. There is a faint burnt malt aroma hidden in there somewhere. The flavor has big yet smooth burnt maltiness. Then mild dark fruitiness joins in with prunes and dates. As the finish approaches the roasty malts increase in intensity along with a mild malt astringency. This retired beer has aged beautifully. detroiter (958), Euphoria, Minnesota, USA

Pours a deep dark black, topped by half an inch of creamy tan foam. Excellent head retention. Thick lacing. Sweet bread and chocolate malt in the aroma.
Bittersweet chocolate malt, a little burned coffee, dark roasted grain. A unique earthy dryness in the finish - rye perhaps? Tangy hops in the finish. Velvety smooth mouthfeel, creamy carbonation.
One delightful beer. GreatLibations (1454), Last Supper, Arizona, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 20, 2007 Pours midnight brown w/ a shallow, semi creamy froth that dissapears quickly. Aromas of roasted cocoa fill the air. Very nice! Medium nectar w/ residual effers that create a hard-water texture. Big roasty flavors w/ plenty of cocoa. Slight bagelesque nuance is quickly forgotten amidst this robust foreground. The finish is bittered perfectly. Not so dry and very enjoyable. daboskabouter (1470), Fergus, Ontario, Canada

Slightly fruity nose with coffee beans and, yeah, there's some bready notes in there, not sure if it's pumpernickel though. Body is bitter-sweet with a nice roastiness and a touch of coffee. Some fruit as well, finishes lightly bitter. Nice. Sven (229), Lancaster, California, USA

Dark as Guinness, immense froathy head that would not subside for more than 10 minutes, little bagel bits on the bottom of the glass. Huge roasted coffee and smoked peat flavor. Light carbonation. Nice hop usage, you don't really notice them until about half way through, then they start to build on you. A great beer. BierBauch (651), Cape Coral Waterfront Wonderland, Florida, USA

Dark with a thick tan head that dies down a bit but has staying power. Has hundreds of miniscule floaties which I am presuming is remnants of a bagel. Aroma is really nice with roasted malt, cocoa and a hint of chocolate. Has a great smooth full bodied feel just like a good stout. Slight dry and bitter finish, but only slight. Flavor is also really nice with a good dose of coffee and chocolate coming through and a slight hop bitterness. This is a really good brew and definitely worth trying. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Sep 24, 2004 Updated: Sep 25, 2004(22 oz bottle) A surprisingly good beer for gimmick marketing; I'm not sure I detect any pumpernickel, but then again, I've eaten a slice of pumpernickel bread maybe a dozen times in my life (sad for a native New Englander); Mostly what I get is a moderately sweet, but fairly strong and bitter dark roasted, coffee flavor; The bitterness gets strong in the finish, dominating all other flavors; It's also quite yeasty from start to finish; Seems fairly spicy at times, especially on the first few sips; Full bodied, and fairly heavy and dry on the palate; The nose is very bready, mildly dark roasted maltiness, with a faint aroma of brown mushrooms; Pitch black in color with just a tad bit of ruddy brown at the very edges if held up to a bright light; Dark tan head pours about an inch or so thick and exhibits excellent head retention, maintaining a small head until I finished the glass; Quite a bit of patchy lacing as well; Lots of pasty yeast in the bottom of the bottle
